I would like to not be limted by the weather, can you recommend a decent set of mudguards for my racer? Easy to fit for the mechanically incompetent?

What clearance? What eyelets? SKS P35 is the standard choice if they will fir under your brakes. SKS Raceblade Long if it has very tight clearances. Brake drop is the biggest determinant of fit, especially on the front.

Fitting permanent guards is always painful.

Just fitted Raceblade Longs to my Charge Juicer. Took less than an hour and they've been faultless for 200 miles.

Chromoplastics, if they'll fit. Fitted 5 sets in last two years (all on different bikes, obvs, and not all for me). Love em. Fit them well and they're near invisible.

+1 chromoplastics, but sometimes a little help from a heat gun to get them really snugged in. Worth spending a bit of time to get them 'just so'.
