for my 29er ATB/MTB? I’m a heavy/frequent climber FWIW
It’s an XTR setup with XTR/Blackspire rings
Twice now a link has forced apart. First time it failed en route I had help from stranger/Samaritan/wizard who kindly bodged with an old chainlink and some peening. Now another one is just beginning to flare open and is skipping gears. It was a used bike and the chain on inspection seems to be a CN6600 which would make it an Ultegra? Is that an odd choice for a mountain bike?
Do all 10 speed chains have these mushroom style /nonreplaceable pins? My bodged pin/link is going strong, where as the rest of the chain seems set to demolish itself!
Cost effective/fixable options would be a bonus 🙂
WWSTWD?
KMC.
Never had one fail.
I've had Shimano, Campagnolo, and Wipperman and they've all snapped.
^ Thnks - any particular KMC chain for my setup? Ideally around £20> rather than £30<
X10
KMC chains every time
Shimano are good at most things, but not chains for some reason.
I remember one ride over Skiddaw when we had 3 snapped Shimano chains
Never seen a KMC chain snap
Last night I got fed up of the racket my 10-spd road bike gears were making. I swapped derailleur, shifters, cassette all to no avail. It came down to the mix of SRAM chain and shimano sprockets. I fitted a KMC chain and peace, calm and virtually silent power transfer ensued.
So I'd say, no SRAM, yes KMC.
There's a lot of fake chains out there so shop carefully if buying online
KMC make some chains for Shimano and Campag (sauce https://thecycleclinic.co.uk/collections/chain )
Never snapped a Shimano chain, snapped a KMC chain so YMMV.
I'd get a Shimano XT/XTR CN-HG95 10-speed Chain with a Whipperman Connex quick link as they are reusable, can be taken off easily by hand and are bombproof. Read the reviews of the chain online if you fear snapping.
A couple of things
1. If the chain is failing, the cassette might not mesh nicely with a new chain.
2. If you have a front mech, some quick links can fail for whatever reason. Never seems to happen on my 1x bikes.
3. Shimano XT chain joined with the correct joining pin is the most reliable in my experience.
Close to 100kg rider who actually likes climbing.
Never seen a KMC chain snap
Used kmc for years without issues then had 2 snap last year, a mate also snapped one but this was on a stupidly unrestricted electric bike his mate had converted from an old Carrera hardtail. I've been using shimano xt on both bikes since then with no troubles (both 11spd)
Never really had chains snap, but just had 2 SRAM 12sp go in quick succession on different bikes. It happens, I don't think it means anything really.
Replace with the best quality you can afford.
If you want to save the old chain or the new chain skips, you could try repairing the old one with the joining pins to get a few more miles.
Thanks so plenty to think about. Could be burying my head in the sand and thinking maybe going have to replace the whole drivetrain. May be time to finally convert to SS. Selling on the shifters and derailleurs should fund a decent job of it.
