[#11183833]

Hi all.

I posted a few weeks back about some weirdness going on with the Pike forks that came with my Whyte S150.

Since then I've managed to but a cassette removal tool and have a look in the air side of the fork.

I let all the air out and removed the cap and there is one grey token.

However I'm concerned about the fact that the fork was still acting like it had air in it even though the top cap was still off ?

I could press down on the forks and they would return up as though there is still air in them ? Is this right ?

Do you think they need a strip down ?

Cheers.

It could be air in the lowers. After about a year of riding the lower air seal always goes on mine... so air leaks out of the negative chamber into the lowers, then the +ve and -ve equalize, then more leaks out the -ve...

Stick a cable tie down the inside of the fork seal, see if you get air leak out.

It made mine feel extremely harsh, until eventually the fork seals popped out.

Yeah that’s not right - with the air all out the forks should go right to the bottom and stay there. You must have pressure in the lowers. Zip tie down the side of the stanchions is said to let that air out. Might be a one off, or it might be you need to fully service your air spring

Would there not be air in the damping side too? Unless all assembled with the forks compressed of course.

just whip off the lowers, clean up the air spring seals, re grease , fresh oil and reassemble. Try the zip tie method first though. A lower spring service is very simple and the only special tool you will need will be some circlip pliers. Full instructions are on the Sram/Rockshox web site.

It will return. The damping bladder is pushing the fork back up.

Lower leg service is really easy as already said and it's something that needs doing regularly anyway so nows the time to learn.

As above, air in the lowers. Also when you compress a deflated fork you actually create a vacuum in the negative air side, which will also make them bounce back. I'd put a zip tie down the seals and not worry about it any more.

Cheers all.
I will look to get a service kit for them.

Not sure why you need circlip pliers for just a lower leg service? Not the way I've watched online or actually done it? It's just lowers off, clean inc foam rings, grease, put back together, oil job done isn't it?

Grease the air shaft seal while it's accessible.

Edit I also put 10ml of oil on top of the shaft just to keep the top o ring lubricated
