Am I stuck with the £37 Park tool BBT-30.3 (& adapters) as my only options, or are the FSA BB30 adapter & removal tool basically the same things at less than 1/4 of the price.
I'm got one bike with PF30, £40 for a tool I might use twice a year is excessive (& local LBS has lead time of 1wk+ for repairs).

I use the same piece of threaded bar that I use for headsets, I might have needed a bigger washer though.

I'm planning on using a thread bar but don't have anything big enough to fit against the bearings, hence my thinking even though BB30 & PF30 are difference standard, the bearings are the same size... think I may just order them & send em back if there's something badly wrong.

Hmm are you planning on taking the old PF30 bottom bracket cups out? I'm just guessing the FSA removal tool might just remove the bearings and not be wide enough to latch onto the cups. Complete guess though, it's only £4 and if it removes your bearings so it'd be handy later (as the park tool doesn't do this).

I'm hoping to only need to replace the bearings now. But the old cups were in there REALLY tight, even having flooded it with GT85 I had to hit the park tool remover pretty damn hard with the mallet to get it to budge, I was worried about damaging the frame. I'm just thinking that FSA remover might be a bit tricky to line up and hammer out with force. I hear where you are coming from though, that park tool seems stupid - I justified the purchase as it was about twice the price as the charge to get two new BBs fitted at the LBS.

FWIW, I asked the question to CRC about the FSA removal tool to see if it removed the bearings from the PF30.

The answer was:

This 'press' is designed to distribute an even load across the cartridge when knocking BB30 bearings out of a frame; this tool will also enable the PF30 cup to be knocked out of the frame without causing any damage also.

So you can use it to get the cups out, but not the bearings. HTH

Interesting... The tools came today, and I'm not that impressed with the removal tool, as it only grips the inside bearing race, so if the bearing fall to piece it's useless - I might return that but then for the price I may as well keep it and try it.

The FSA BB30 Bearing Installation Tool will work fine to install bearings into the PF cups if nothing else & probably the cups into the frame, as it fit perfectly against the whole bearing face (inner and outer).
