Have been a Crank Brothers devotee for a good few years. However have had 2 sets of pedals fail in a week (Egg beaters at Honc, Candys on the Chase today). In both cases the pedal body slid off the axle. There are no rebuild kits to be had so I am reconsidering my pedal choice.

Are the new style crank brothers any longer lasting than the old versions, and are they rebuildable (assuming rebuild kits are available)?

Are Shimano XT or Look Quartz the way to go?

3 sets of Candy's for me, all failed as described - last set had done about 3k over 2012, so very wet.

But as we were out I bought the only SPD's I could get, a pair of 520's. Still got them on.

Apparently Time's are worth a look.

Used to use shimano. They never failed on me but the bearings developed play really quickly from memory. If newer ones are longer lasting that sounds good.

Shimano for me. 520's cost £25 including cleats and last mr about 3 years. I'm sure they could be serviced but for the cost I treat myself to a new pair.

They're called Shimano Pedalling Dynamics for a reason.
😉
