I went out for a ride today and as I set off my left pedal made some bad noises(metal grinding and crunching) and then refused to spin. As I carried on it loosened slightly but every now and then would throw my foot off at the top of the stroke.

The pedals are a set of Crankbrothers 50/50s

What has happened to the bearings and is it easy to replace them or cheaper/easier to just buy a new set of pedals?

Once you fix the bearings the coloured plates will probably fall off. Scrap them, they are a bit pants.

Can I do this even though I bought them ages ago and don't have the receipt anymore.

slw what would you recommend replacing them with? I have enjoyed the size of the pedals as I have pretty big feet and found the adjustable pins good for when it is wet and muddy out.
