>is it all off road?

no, there's a fair bit of road work, but it's height gain on road (in nice countryside for the most part), and off road descents

according to my guide book - and assuming it is the old classic Buxton circuit - it is 15 miles of which 9 are off road. There's a fairly extended section climbing up to Derbyshire Bridge that is road, but it is very pleasant quiet lane in some lovely countryside. The road past Whitehall Centre is now sufficiently broken up to offer some fun, and again in some great countryside. I used to live there as a kid ๐Ÿ™‚

It's an "old school" route if you know what I mean, but Jules could have some surprises up his sleeves

The surprises will have to wait until summer, 7p.m. onwards ๐Ÿ˜‰

You can bring it if you like, why not. Will did the pootle on a singlespeed (rigid) CX bike, last year. We'll be on the silver machine

I've hired a tandem a couple of times before and they're a lot of fun but must be mental on anything remotely gnarly!!!

Lee, is it fixed? Should be a cracking ride, even if I'm a bit hungover. Swiss rolls are on me again!

Woo, my first peak pootle, will be coming with Rob (as in robdob, see above).

Riding a CX bike sounds like the way to go for this ride.

How will I die on a cx bike? Thought it was gentle?

Quite rocky in places, though a lot of the ride is on tarmac.

How rocky though? It's that my mtb is a 6 inch travel job, sounds a bit much for this ride.

I don't mind the odd rock or two.

Naa I was only joking ๐Ÿ˜† You'll be fine on a CX bike, certainly fine on a SS

No real rocks until half way point, these are loose and ranging from small pebbles to small babies heads, this is a climb and then a lovely descent.

Next rocky section is an uppy bit, mostly small stuff, then one other rocky downhill, mostly slabs with small loose stuff.

Now I have to report, there has been an awful lot of water damage from the rain over the last couple of weeks. Things I used to ride have become tricky/much fun.

It's fine on a singlespeed, one or two of the climbs are really testing and I didn't make them last time I tried, but I *have* done the whole route SS before now

6" travel will make the descents a LOT faster. CX will make the descents more, umm, interesting and challenging...

You forgot to mention its also a shonky piece of tat that weighs as much as a small moon, looks like someone attacked it with a skip full on anvils and rattles like a granny full of spanners. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I might put my new uppy downy seatpost on to make my bike completely unsuitable.

Who was it that rode the Edale loop on the SS cross bike? Seriously dude you have lots of skill or bottle or both. I thought I was going ok on my Pitch when you passed me with a complete lack of respect for your own safety it certainly looked "on the edge". ๐Ÿ˜‰

Honestly, 99% of this route you can ride on just about anything. The only iffy bit is the top section of the descent into Buxton which is basically a messy rockery, though you can pick your way through it just fine. I'm a slow, technically inept rider and I've done it singlespeed, geared hardtail, 120mm full sus and 140mm full sus and all were fine, just varied a little in smoothness. You will be okay whatever you choose to ride.

It's actually a really nice route on a singlespeed fwiw, one mildly steep climb that's hard because the surface is mostly rubble and thus traction is at a bit of a premium, but that's about it. Oh, and the first haul out from the stream, which is a pig on a singlespeed with cold legs... or for me anyway, but then as above, I'm slow and weak and ill etc. Blah...

The Buxton Baby Heads descent is definately the most technical bit of the ride but there's usually a smooth line through. Often next to the fence but does move round - so dont wear posh jackets or blame me if its somewhere else.

Going the guide book way round or figure 8 it to take in the track to Fernlee Res and over the dam?

Not familiar with the figure 8 loop - you mean from the White Hall centre, dropping over the ridge to Long Lane? Or something else? Been meanig to try that for years, and doing the old road through Rake End

Mmmm.

We might come to this if there's going to be some tandem action.

That's if you don't mind another couple of tandemists trying to steal a bit of tandemattention? ๐Ÿ˜‰

experienced tandemeers ๐Ÿ˜† ๐Ÿ˜† ๐Ÿ˜†

We've not even been on it for about six months.

So that's perfect training for riding it in front of a large group of people then. ๐Ÿ˜‰
