Cost + shipping then add
4.7% duty
Then 20% vat
And possible handling charge maybe £20?

There will be an invoice on the outside of the box, they have to put this on by law,the problem is if you try & disguise it & they dont like it,theyll x ray it anyway! ,so the only way to to get around really, is to get the shipper the to mark the value down & put SAMPLE on the box, downside if it goes missing you can only claim for the invoice value! !.

Anyway,to calculate duty,you roughly add 10% import duty,then vat on the lot! ,so,£500.00 x 10%=£550.00 x20% =£110.00 duty,so total payable to customs is £160.00! .

Or if youre vat registered pay through ure Co,& pop it on ure return & hope you never have to explain when you next get a vat visit! .

IIRC VAT is also charged on the cost of any insurance.

Yes it does vary and is lower on bike parts than whole bikes (I think it's that way around).

i think parts are lower than whole bikes

you can (with patience) look it up on here

tariff codes and commodity codes

http://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/dds2/taric/taric_consultation.jsp?Lang=en&Expand=true&SimDate=20120222

some pretty bizarre stuff in there

in theory the seller should enclose multiple invoice copies with the correct taric (or commodity code in old language) shown on the invoice that way whoever enters the goods on the duty system at point of entry will get the correct duty level - more often than not someone at the frieght co just looks up something that seems vaguely ok and enters that and so the level of duty can vary

The commodity code of the product gives the duty rate payable.

Duty on pedal cycles is 14% using commodity code 8712 00 30 00. Steveh was correct.

Duty on forks, using commodity code 8714 91 30 19 is 4.7% as already mentioned above.

Regards,
Matt.

Edit antigee beat me to it.
