I'm buying my mum (80) a mobile.

Does anyone know which provider doesn't kill your minutes if you don't use them, and can recommend a current pensioner-friendly mobile? (I think that would be easier than an older s/h model so she has somewhere to go if she has problems).

Can't help with the tarifs but I'd recomend a Nokia 6210 if you can find one. Has a nice big screen with large text and the buttons are separated).

how about looking into a friends and fammily deal?

then you can call her, she can call you, for free as long as you like.
i think most networks do something similar.

orange do some good tarrifs,
i get oodles of free texts on mine, which i realise is no use to you, but they are bound to do one that DOESNT have oodles of free stuff, but is dirt cheap and simple?

....racoon is the simple orange one.

15p per min, any network , any time, so no need to worry about on peak, off peak or cross network.

Virgin used to do a thing that is a pay as you go, but it automatically tops up by direct debit. It is great for people who spend tiny amounts (like my £3 a month or so), and don't want to worry about topping up / having credit expire.

I don't know if you can still get it though, I can't work out from their site.

you can get orange to do that too joe, i think most will now?

you set a predetermined lower limit, when it reaches it, it automatically tops you up (or so i understand)

I've just checked a Virgin PAYG phone that I use on holidays only & it still has credit on it from last August

The Virgin one I have, it seems to charge me exact amounts - ie. if I spend £4.33 on calls in a month, I get charged that, it isn't really like top-ups at all - it's more like a contract, except with no monthly charge.
