Ok, I earn mid range salary and pay lots of tax.I've just got my TCL ticket.can I claim some of my tax back? a colleague does beating and legally claims about a grand a year, he only earns about £100 a year from doing it! Claims all his vet bills and pet insurance. I'd obviously have to declare all the money I earned guiding.
Legitimate expenses eg bike, consumables, certain kit (backpack, first aid kit, emergency kit), membership of professional bodies, etc., can be offset against tax. Best to go through it with a good accountant though because some things may not be legitimate expenses eg certain items of clothing.
I bet he should only claim a percentage of his vet bills and insurance based on the days he works
He's done it legit through an accountant so I don't think he's in the wrong.
If he argues the dog is only for the beating and not a pet as well he could reclaim all costs. You should be able to claim for certain things as well especially if you have a bike that's only for guiding...

Surely you can only offset costs against income? You can't offset £1000 of bills against £100 income surely.
Are you sure he's not willy waving / exagerating?
I claim for a bike a year, maintenance, insurance, clothing, first aid gear, mileage on bike.
When I was working as a blacksmith, my accountant accidentally put a skateboard through as expenses. Whoops.
I think a trip to an accountant is in order. Brassspine, are you in a similar position to me our do you do it full time?
