Is this illegal for cars? There is a section of A road near me ( A24 between Mickleham and Dorking) where cars from a nearby restaurant use the cycle lane for parking when the restaurant's car park is full. This then forces one onto the A road with cars doing 50 mph. Not safe at all.

Is the cycle lane marked by a solid or dashed white line?

Don't be stupid, cycle lanes are just differently marked parking bays. Everyone knows that.
Just phone up the council and complain everytime. Eventually they'll send parking wardens out.

Highway code says

240

You MUST NOT stop or park on:

* the carriageway or the hard shoulder of a motorway except in an emergency (see Rule 270)
* a pedestrian crossing, including the area marked by the zig-zag lines (see Rule 191)
* a clearway (see 'Traffic signs')
* taxi bays as indicated by upright signs and markings
* an urban clearway within its hours of operation, even when a broken white line is on your side of the road, except to pick up or set down passengers (see 'Traffic signs')
* a road marked with double white lines, except to pick up or set down passengers
* a tram or cycle lane during its period of operation
* a cycle track
* red lines, in the case of specially designated ‘red routes’, unless otherwise indicated by signs

Any vehicle may enter a bus lane to stop, load or unload where this is not prohibited (see Rule 141).

[Laws MT(E&W)R regs 7 & 9, MT(S)R regs 6 & 8, ZPPPCRGD regs 18 & 20, RTRA sects 5, 6 & 8, TSRGD regs 10, 26 & 27, RTA 1988 sects 21(1) & 36]

However its how you define cycle track that is the issue

as aP says - just keep on complaining to the council about it - they will eventually send wardens round.

It is solid, irregularly interrupted in front of drive ways ( that lead to private properties) .

Not just the restaurant users are parking in the cycle path, but on weekends cars parked further along , probably visitors to houses further on on the left.

At first glance that looks like an "advisory" cycle lane and therefore nothing can be done by the local authority if people park in it. The police however, could look to see if they consider the parking to be an obstruction of the public highway.

Some cycle lanes are in by traffic regulation order and are legally enforceable by the local authority.

no idea re cyclelane but you can only enter a chevron area with a solid white line in an emergency so parking there must be illegal as some of th ecar will be in this area
Complain and complain and complain

As an aside, Frascati's restaurant...wow, it's like stepping back to 1970. Nice dessert trolley though.

Thats a solid line and a chevroned area so I think it is illegal to park on it. Complain to the council, take photos and send them in, keep on at them.

Follow the links in the highway code to the various bits of law to make your case stronger

Just keep telling the council it's dangerous. If enough people complain then they'll eventually have to do something, however it is Surrey so don't get your hopes up.

Right, looks like it is not legal then. Will take pics in the future and take it up with the council.
Nuke, I've not been to Frascati's myself but heard from a friend who has been that the decor is very,er, "70's 🙂
