[Closed] Oval chain rings with a horizontal drop out singlespeed.....

After going on a ride with a friend who was waxing lyrical about his oval chain ring set up (single ring up front with a chain tensioner just behind the cranks and a rohlof rear hub) I was wondering if it is possible to run one as a SS on horizontal drop outs. I like the clean looks of my SS set up and don't really want a tensioner so was wondering if anyone has any advice, thanks.

You dont need a tensioner to run elliptical rings ss. Have been using them for years on all my single speeds. The trick is to rotate the crank to the 4 o'clock position where the oval is tallest and then set your chain tension as you would normally. As long as you have a nicw chain line it will work perfectly.

Works just fine, well it did on my old biopace set up!

As above, my SS has an EBB rather than track ends, but is quite happy with an oval ring

Like the others I have no problems with an oval ring on my SS with EBB

Same here, it's fine. There will usually be a tiny change in chain length but no more than you get with a regular round chainring as they are rarely perfectly centred.

Was discussed including some videos and boring maths a while back

Bottom line - it just works, do it.
