The power of advertising!

I had a cove and that race face jacket.

Cove was awesome for over a decade.

3 zips died on the jacket and it was the price of a gore packlight jacket to get it fixed. I've still got the packlight jacket although it's a bit tattered now.

Wow, blast from the past. I've still got my raceface aqualite jacket. Seams have all gone and now used when doing dirty crappy work outside. The best feature was the massive pocket on the but flap.

*everyone* had a Parrot (or Polaris) windproof back in the day.
And RockShox Duke - I have nothing but bad memories of the damping, reliability and stiffness.

I was wearing my old Polaris windproof at the weekend!

A few weeks ago I gave away my old 2001 Orange Patriot and a 2005 Orange P7 frame to a bloke for his two teenage sons. I was able to proudly display my ownership of old Ermintrude the Patriot via a 2005 Orange Bikes 'Readers Rides' advert on the back page of Singletrack magazine.

😀

Ive still got 2 Parrot windproofs (not in those limited edition colours, granted) and a Parrot waterproof.
Wonder how many of the shops listed by Rocky Mountain & Fox are still going?

Duke forks. Had them on my superlight. Superlight still going strong. Duke paint flaked away and died years ago. Must have been some of the first fox forks about then? Tiny things

I had a Lucky Strike, wanted a Cove Hummer but couldn't afford it . Then a careless car driver took me out , frame was replaced through his insurance, Wheelies couldn't get a LS instead I had to " settle" for a Hummer instead ! I had to wait about 7 months but it was worth it , rode that bike in Morzine , Tahoe , Whistler 💪
Still got it now , never going to part with it

The time machine taking us back to a place where companies would pay for advertising space in print media. There's even a prominent phone number in that parrot ad!

I remember MBUK having quadruple page adverts for Dave Hinde listing prices of all sorts of kit. Scroll through the tiny 6pt print, phone up and place your order and then in 2 weeks when it had't arrived you could phone up again and he'd be a rude obnoxious arse down the phone to you.

The halcyon days of telephone ordering and waiting a fortnight for delivery. 😉

I had one of those Race Face jackets, can't remember what became of that one - it was a nice blue and black with reflective piping. And I had one of the RAD-tubed Cove Stiffee frames (2002 maybe?!)

Lusted after after a Hummer, eventually got hold of one, and it was a really comfy fast bike. With epic chain suck. On a muddy day, I'd be digging that chain out of the says like two or three time a ride. The gouges it made in the frame were terrible to behold. Sold it on.

like many I had one of those RF jackets and like many the zip.

Only Cove I owned was a Handjob with the worlds thinnest paint job as the back stays hardly had any paint on them, **** knows how it passed QC.

I had a Hand Job too. Not from seeing it in ads, but from riding (remember him?!) French Juan's and feeling the "steel is real" feel 🙂
There were jokes about trying French Juan's handjob in the woods and loving the feel.. or something, but I can't remember them now lol

Owned the litespeed built Hummer, great bike right up until the frame cracked around the gusset on the down tube after nearly 4 years. Sold the replacement frame as 29ers were starting to appear!

I really wanted a Stiffee but settled for a Marin 'hardcore' hard tail instead which was brilliant. That had dukes I think which I swapped for a set of Mx comps which I thought were brilliant unlike the dukes.

There's a What MTB (I think) issue from around this time that had a double spread of hardtail frames, Stiffee, cotic soil, DMR switchback, etc.

I do miss proper UST tyres.
Vanilla 125’s were brilliant until the spring snaps. I built my Banshee Rune with a Z1 coil and it’s just as plush but crying out for a Grip 2 damper.
I still have the Race Face free ride jacket as well. Front zip doesn’t work properly anymore though.

I had a THE fender like the one in the Fox Forx ad. Utterly ridiculous. The power of advertising, eh?
