For my road bike please. I have the top of stem mount that came with my 500 but think I'd like it out front. They seem to vary from about £15 - £30.....

Plus 1 for the K-Edge. Pricey but worth it. Got one for my Edge 500. Now I've replaced that with the slightly bigger Edge 520 the bottom buttons are a bit close to the stem so if you are thinking about going for a 520 at some point maybe get the longer mount for the 1000.

Why do folk use these compared with the standard Garmin mount on the stem?

^^^^^ I am thinking of one because I find when on the drops on the road bike I have to look downwards more than I'd like to. I hope this will make it easier to glance at.

Can't see any K Edge ones in black, anyone tried the Garmin own version ?

Cp, more secure, less wobbling when swiping between screens, and in a better viewing position.

Arguably, the head unit is better protected in the event of a crash as well.

Iain, the Garmin one is OK, but K-edge is much neater. Takes up less bar space as well.

Sram. Half the price of the official Garmin or the I-have-too-much-money K-Edge 😉 and as it's plastic it's less likely to snap the tabs off your Garmin (not saying the K-edge does that, but plenty of aftermarket ones seem to).

I have the bar-fly mount. It has two positions, but the nearer one is only useful if you have a smaller garmin. If you get one, loctite the bolt - I lost mine descending Wrynose pass on last year's Fred Whitton.

I got one from Ebay - 3d printed thing (and can't find the link now)...should have been £18 but were selling them for £4...works well, holds the unit in place (Garmin 500) and seems solid enough. Keeps the unit away from crash damage - unless I manage to lap perfectly vertically nose-down with 2 odd shaped rocks sticking up - one for the wheel and 1 for the Garmin.

I think it is better than the standard Garmin mount as I don't need to look as far down to see the unit. Saying that, I doubt I'd be happy to pay more than a tenner for a solution as the Garmin standard thing isn't bad, just not as practical.

K-Edge. Unless you have Giant aero bars, in which case you will need their own version. The K-Edge mounts are superb and put the Garmin in just the right place. The Sram one is too high so lives on the TT bars because I have't bought the dedicated K-Edge TT one yet.

The new hinged one-piece design is wonderful. Buy a chain catcher while you are at it.

Bar Fly stem mount (if you have a compatible stem). The second, further out position came in handy when my 500 broke and I replaced it with a 520 which has the Lap button on the edge closest to the stem face plate. I also have a 3D printed mount and you can't get a finger in to press those two buttons.

Why out front? Much easier to read when out of the saddle on a steep climb.

+1 Sram MTB or road versions. Much cheaper than K-edge et al.

I've got a new and boxed Garmin one you can have for £15 if it's any good to you.

Treated myself to a K Edge one last year with some birthday money. Has been rock solid. And I can now read the screen as my eyes adjust to my age......

I found that the screen wasn't particularly readable when mounted on the stem due to reflections. The out-front mount puts the unit in the right place to actually use it.

Sram...and as it's plastic it's less likely to snap the tabs off your Garmin

I wasn't that lucky I'm afraid, this happened with a SRAM mount...

...official Garmin or K-Edge for me since then.

munkster - not sure if you already know but raceware direct do a superglue on replacement for Garmins with broken tabs. I've been using one for several months, no issues.

Garmin tabs breaking is a well documented problem, not limited to SRAM mounts...

Yep, that's from last year, that Garmin has been sold on long ago with the alu "DogsEars" replacement tab safely in place. Ironically I think I preferred it with that on there!

And reggie I'm sure, but I've used Garmin mounts for years and it's only ever happened with a SRAM mount. I'm not saying it's a SRAM issue more that cheap mounts, in my experience, are false economy on a device worth a few hundred quid. YMMV, quite clearly.

I would send the barfly mounts, having got an out front one. I think k edge have slightly changed the design as earlier ones had issues with the garmin mount (in case you buy second hand)

SRAM for me, snapped when I crashed big which is preferable to the Garmin taking the force, apart from that simple and easy.
Reason for using? I have MTB Stems so there is no room for the mount. Along with it being in a better position and more secure.

Bit late now ... but the SuperStar garmin mount is very good for £13; all Alu made and adjustable too ... Bargain.

not saying the K-edge does that

My experience of a K-edge is that the plastic insert snaps and my edge 800 was unscathed (apart from being untethered and landing on the ground). The inserts are 99p so I have a couple of spares for next time

K-edge prices appear to have gone up this year, some of their mounts are beyond ridiculous money now unless you can find a healthy discount
