Just ordered a cheap Shimano BB from ebay, however I've now noticed its descrition says that its for Deore Hollowtech II Bottom Bracket Cups! Does this mean I'll only be getting part of it as I've not idea what components a BB is plit down into!?
Reason for replacing is that there is a load of play in mine (I've checked its not just loose!)so guessing its the bearings that have gone, but as it was only a cheap one figured I'd replace the whole thing for now!
Thanks
So do you currently have a hollowtech 2 bb where the bearings sit external to the frame and the axel is part of the chainset?
Dare I ask how you were planning to fit it?
A BB usually comprises:
Outer Bearing in alloy cup with polymer Top-Hat bearing cover
Inner Bearing in alloy cup with ditto
Central dirt tube with O-rings each end
3x 2.5mm external spacers
Inadequate grease
You will need the tool to remove the pre-load nut and the cups before inserting the new one.
Pre-load is just that...not 10lbs.ft torque.
Just take up the slack with a Shimano crankset. (GXP is different)
You can re-use the dirt tube and spacers, but I would only remove the top-hats and a rubber seal to fill the bearings with grease if you are competent.
Expect a similarly short life from the new one....

Lol, you may ask! Meeting up with a friend at the start of Welsh Ride Thing and he's going to fit it with me there so I know whats what in the future!
Here's what I've brought, its the same as the exisiting one on my 26er On one Scandal.

Its lasted a fair while in its defence, woyuld go for something more expensive but don't have the cash right now so figured for £13 quid I'd rather just chuck it in till it wears then get a decent one next time around!
So have I brought everything I need or have I coc*ked up and will end up spending more anyhow! 😀
double post
As long as whats in the picture is what turns up, then you've got everything you need. 🙂
What you have ordered will be fine.
If a friend is fitting it, ask him if he will remove the top-hats and get some extra grease behind a rubber seal on each bearing (I know it is better to get grease behind the inner rubber seal, but that is not practical here).
Keep all the extra bits/leftovers/old spacers and tube as you/someone on STW may need them later.
Keep the 'good' bearing too.

I need one of those too, killed my BB at the weekend, with a grand total of 100km on it 😯
I suspect I may have put a bit too much pre-load on the bearings, but 100km is astoundingly poor!
There was me thinking that it would be an improvement over the square taper it replaced 😆
Cheers, Rich
for future, you can get XT BB's from germany for a similar price to deore over here. have a look on rose bikes. you pay delivery but its worth ordering a few anyway and keeping them in stock handy for next time it want changing.
Cheers all for your responses! Good news! I very much see it as a temporary stop gap. If anyone needs any of the spare parts I'll end up with let me know!
