Orange StageEvo with Hope carbon crank - clearance issue?

Is it even each side?

Presumably the old cranks had no such issues? 

If you've got any spacers in the correct place and the installation right, then maybe the cranks are faulty. Can you put them on another frame to see if the uneven spacing follows the cranks?

Is this a brand new frame as well? I would be going back to basics on checking alignment and correct spacing. 

I will go and check my Stage Evo with SLX cranks.

Will try them in my Orange Alpine Evo but need to swap BB’s to do that so job for later perhaps!

No. Bought the bike (from Orange) last May and have been running GX cranks and they’ve been fine. 

I’ve got X01 cranks on my alpine so going to take those off and try on the Stage to see what the clearance is like. It could just be a Hope vs Orange thing - which will be annoying and means I’ll be ebay’ing the cranks as I doubt I’ll be able to return them now

No - bigger gap on non drive side. About what I’d “expect” to be there. Non DS (image below) is fine with the rubber boot. DS doesn’t have room for boot to be fitted

I could put a spacer between BB and DS crank but that would push the chain line out - it’s supposed to be 52mm and that would make it 53/54 depending on spacer which doesn’t seem right 

I doubt I’ll be able to return them now

If the uneven spacing follows the crank to the other frame, and other cranks don't do it on this frame, then returning them under warranty should be no problem. 

Yea good shout. I’ll try that later and will see what the bike shop says on Monday when they speak to Hope and Orange (my orange bikes and all the hope bits have come from them)

Oddly enough I’ve just checked the chainring that was on theGX cranks that came on the bike and that has a 6mm offset chainring fitted to it!  Makes no sense as the setup for my 73mm bb shell should be (according to everything I’ve read and can work out from sram manuals); DUB BB + 4.5mm DS spacer + crank (not wide) with 3mm offset chainring fitted 

I give up!!

Do you, like me, buy from Orange but a bit of a 'clear out' bike? Mines a right mongrel with Deore (but came with cheap crankset), WtB wheeler, Magura brakes, cheap BrandX carbon bars and expensive RaceFace stem, unbranded dropped with a really really wide WtB saddle on.. 

Yeah I did exactly that. stage Evo factory with full fox factory kit, XT rear mech, sram cranks, pro 5 wheels and stans rims!! Only the fox bits left on it now though. 

im starting to think that was what they had left in the drawer when they built it!!

I’ve got a Stage Evo Factory too (same spec as yours originally) - I did wonder why they shipped with GX cranks when it has XT groupset - you may have just found the reason!! 😲

Well I’ve been doing A LOT of reading on it all and the 55 chainline seems to be “typical” where UDH rear ends are used. The current stage models all have 55mm chainline and wide sram cranks which push the arms out about 3mm each side. 
on closer inspection there are slight rub marks on the drive side chainstays on both my Stage Evo and Alpine Evo (both UDH) and both had SRAM non-wide cranks.

May also explain the fiddly set up on the AXS gears I have on both bikes as the chainring is running 52mm chainline and it’s set up for 55mm - possibly 

(Shimano cranks seems to have a wider Q-factor than sram by default.)

Going to try a set of dub wide cranks that a mate has to see the difference and my mate who runs the bike shop I bought them from is going to speak to hope and hopefully get the wide version of the carbon cranks. 

if that doesn’t sort it I’m selling my bikes and taking up knitting!! 

XT on a stage evo (2024) fine here

The stage has asymetric swingargm, (sorry if someones already said that above), for stiffness. The drive side swing arm sticks out much further than the NDS. I got mine second hand and the previous owner clearly had had a boot on his crank, as all the paint (and some of the metal) was worn away at the point the crank passes on the DS. Ive also had to shift my cleats inboard (feet outward) so my right heel clears the swingarm.

Ran XT on my Stage Evo no issues. 

However as above, from memory if you look down the bike its fairly obvious the back end is asymmetric.

If it aint touching, its fine. The fact you can't fit big chunks of additional rubber onto the end of the Hope crank is a Hope problem, not an Orange problem really. 

A fair point re the protective boots. It does explain why both my swing arms are rubbed!

From memory there was a massive shortage of Shimano cranks post covid and that's when they started speccing whatever they could get hold of?

Just had a chat with the bike shop. Swapping out the hope carbon cranks for the “wide” version after advice from Hope so looking positive! (May have ordered to wide Hope Evo cranks for the other bike to replace the X01’s at the same time! 😜 

So just to close this one off. Orange confirmed the UDH version of the Stage Evo is built around a 55mm chainline. Hope also suggested the same and that the wide axle cranks are suitable 

I’ve fitted the “wide” version of the hope carbon cranks to the stage and also the wide Evo cranks to my Alpine Evo (also UDH) and all working well with better clearance on the drive side swingarm
