Is there actually a good range of adjustment or does the rear tyre foul on the seat tube? Thanks in advance.

Pretty good range of adjustment on it, in reality three different settings, I can't remember the difference in head angles but it is quite a lot and I have never had the tyre foul the seat tube in any setting.

The fact that you can chuck a shorter air shock in there and convert it to a lighter more pedally bike for longer days is great, I would miss the adjustability and that's the one thing that stops me upgrading to an alpine.

Thanks lyrikal, I'm actually on an alpine at the moment, but since building up a 130mm Heckler I thought a slightly longer travel frame would be good, as the alpine wont need to climb anymore.

There won't be that much of a difference between the alpine and the patriot will there? 10mm extra travel, the only real difference being the adjustability.

18 massive mm 🙂 I think the patriot is a bit stronger, but the head angle adjust is the main draw.

I run my 2008 Patriot with the black slider about 1mm proud of its housing, slid towards the head tube, if you see what I mean (therefore going slacker, not steeper). I think it's probably an unofficial setting, but with 170mm 55s and an RP23 the bike feels absolutely amazing - around a 65 degree head angle, I reckon, and a nice, low BB. I once had it set slacker still, but the back wheel buzzed the seat (which was down very low). Set where it is, the bike descends like a mini DH bike, but I can also climb it up long, steep, technical trails - just needs me to crouch forward over the front (not great, but I'm used to it). Alpines seem steeper in the HA by comparison, with a bit less travel too. Their seat angle is probably better for climbing tho. I never bother moving the slider now - it's set perfect for my riding.

You just have to try it out, different shocks, shuttles and tyres all make a difference as to what you can get away with.

I had mine ridiculously slack and low (with a 190mm air shock, 2.35 rear tyre, and 150mm fork) without any fouling issues. Seat angle got a bit slack but otherwise great.

Now mainly use a 200mm/57mm shock with a 160mm Lyrik and it is plenty slack, but could go slacker.

Can't see the need to have a patriot and an alpine though - they're very similar!

Thanks all, looks promising.I have been using an alpine for up, down and along duties, but changing shocks and wheels depending what I'm doing. Then I bought the heckler for trail duties, so I don't need the alpine to climb, so the plan is to sell the alpine frame for the patriot. Before anyone says it, I don't want a full on DH bike, 180mm is ideal for what I want.
