Bit confused on this one ...
Orange site says 12 x 142 but just noticed on my maxle it says 12 x 135.
Also when doing the maxle up you can see it squeezing the frame together slightly to mate with the faces on the hub ?
What's going on here then ?

Have Orange changed the spec on the yearly re marketing ?
I'm not sure. I've checked the spec on my bike as it's a limited edition and it says 12x142.
When I tighten my wheel you can see it close up against the hub. Almost as though the hub spacing is wrong ?
Measure the over locknut width of then wheel. 135 or 142mm.
135 frames (my 26" five for instance) have a flat face and no location for the axle.
142 frames (my Trek) have a U shape 3.5mm depth either side (ie. the extra 7 mm) machined in the frame to locate the axle.
Does the maxle screw right into the frame so the thread is flush with the outside.
Opt1 everything is fine
Opt2 142 frame with 135 wheel / axle
Opt3 142 frame with 142 wheel & short axle (yikes)
Plus other combos
Suspect 1
Even the pics on this link show a 135 mm maxle even though it's listed as a 142.

I will upload some photos of my frame. It has a cut out slot either side of the swing arm for the hub to locate in. The maxle says 12x135 and it sits flush when done up.
If I undo it the frame moves away from the faces of the hub and one side falls out of its groove.

Thats a 142 frame
Sounds like you got a 135 hub and maxle pulling the frame together. Measure the wheel.

This is the original wheel from orange and I'm guessing the maxle too. Will it cause any issues?
EDIT On the page Andy links to it says 135 maxle, 142x12 hub, so I guess its ok, and maybe just confusing (on the face of it) descriptions. If you think about it, whether you had a flat dropout and a 135 hub, or the slotted dropout with a 142 hub, the axle would be the same length to get from the outside of one dropout to the outside of the other.
Then again, I'm making some assumptions there. I've just found a SRAM spec sheet for rear maxles that states they are different lengths for 135, 142 and 150 hubs. I don't know 🙂

This seems to be the same as the 2014 Alpine I used to have. I noticed when I bought it the website said;
Swing Arm Maxle 135x12mm, 142mm Hub Spacing
I just assumed it would operate as a normal 142x12 and it seemed to.
It's 142mm. I got a set of wheels for mine that came with 135mm and they didn't fit. Changed to 142mm (Hope Pro2)and they did.

Br it's the original spec wheels from orange.
If I measure the wheel axle then will that be 142 ?

I'm just not sure there's a problem to solve here.
Have you got a tape measure out? Measure the hub, if it's 142mm across then its all good. If it's 135 across, then the hub is too small for the frame, then you maybe have a problem.
Does the bike ride wonky to make you think there's something wrong?
It's probably got something to do with Orange's tooling resources and a result of a 'unique' solution to changing standards. Ultimately its142 so just treat it as such.
I'm not sure of its a problem or not. Just a bit confusing.
When the maxle is undone the frame is wider than the hub and it does drop out of the dropouts.
If the frame is 142 but the maxle is 135 then surely it wouldn't sit flush when done up ?
Have you got the right hub adapters , I pretty sure theres a different adapter for both 135 and 142 **

I remember my Alpine and the hub fitted perfectly into the little cut outs that help you to position it. There was no gap.
You can see the gap in the pic above.
Does that look normal.
It does look wider, when I was pulling my wheel up the hub contacted the inside of the dropouts on both sides. Still this was a 2014 Alpine, your pics may well be normal for a 29er 5. Contact Orange with the pics.
You don't get cut out bits for the axle to sit in on 135x12 frames.
Just a threaded hole.
And it's not unusual for the frame to splay a little when the axle isn't fitted.
As I said before, measure the wheel. 142mm OK, 135mm not OK. Simples.

As I mentioned before, if it was a 135mm wheel it would be obvious that it didn't fit. If it is not obvious it is 142mm.
Ok so measured this up then .....
Wheel is 142.
Frame is 146.
Did you see that geezer with the hammer in the Guy Martin film? That = 146.

Don't worry about it.
I had a Mondraker with a 135mm rear end that was closer to 150mm without the axle fitted.
Wheel is 142.
That's all that matters.

Both pedals fell off multiple times, the rear shock bushing destroyed itself, snapped a rear mech cable, destroyed the bottom headset bearings and pounded my hands so much that my callouses bled.
Now, go ride that bike like it's a sexy sexy lady.

my Alpine is 142 x 12 and my HopeHubs are set up 142 x 12 adapters just drop in nice, not read what maxles says will go look.
