Last winter ran a 1 x 9 set up on my P7 (On-one stainless 32 tooth front single speed chainring, MRP 1x guard and 32 or 34 cassette).
I fancy the idea of a 1 x 10 so that I can use a 36 cassette for a lower gear.
I appreciate I will need a new shifter, chain, cassette and probably a mech as well.
The question is; Will the chainring work with a 10s chain or will I need a new one? If so any ideas?
If you are going to the expense of replacing all of your running gear I would have thought that replacing the chainring too would be part of the plan.
Seems inexpensive in relation to the rest of the upgrade. ๐
10 speed is still 3/32" internally, but it's externally narrower.

Must be a hell of a rough shift from 12 to 36...
12-36 is a narrower range than 11-34. You'd better off getting a smaller chainring.

Shimano already does a 9 speed 12-36t cassette.. cheap on crc as well

I have recently gone back to 1x9 having adopted this set up on my bike for years.
I now use my hardtail with 1x9.
Using a 32t front and 11-34t rear - gets me up everything (so far) I've tried around Surrey Hills/surronding area. Seems a good mix of gearing too giving near enough all you need off road.
Not sure how much difference having a 36t rear and 10speed spread of gears would actually make.....
Why not pilot the idea with a 9speed set up, trying this gearing?
Works so well I wonder why I don't do this on my full suss to in order to reduce some weight....think the odd Welsh climb would make me miss my granny gear. Albeit have done the whites level climb on a 1x9 (s-works hardtail weighing about 21lbs which know doubt made it easier).

true an extra 200grams over an xt 11-34 - but bet most people carry loads more than that around in their packs, pockets etc

was thinking about gearing yesterday while riding my 8speed mini DH bike (on an XC ride) the bike needs a minimum of 36T chainring for DH and currently has a 11-32 cassette, I can climb on that to a point but it's not easy, adding a 36T sprocket would make it a little easier but the thing is, if I were to stick a cassete with a 36T sprocket on I'd end up having to add another 3 chain links and the chain would flap around hellishly in the smaller sprockets when riding DH - don't really fancy that TBH. plus, I bend cassette sprockets a lot already so long flappy chain and weaker sprokets = FAIL to me

We al know you are a bit of a riding god, despite your modesty, but HTF do folk bend cassette sprockets?
without fitting a mini vid camera to the bike it's difficult to say, but I do it far more on DH bikes than hardtails and the higher range cassettes sprockets seem to far bend more than mid range 8 speed ones.
I've snapped sprockets too ๐ณ
