Hi folks,

PLEASE HELP!

I run a 1x9 setup on my Nomad.......

Just bought a Shimano XT FC-M785 chainset, it is 38/26

I want to run it 1x9 as before, but it seems to be totally out of alignment and fowling on my MRP Mini G by a fair bit! ๐Ÿ™

Im assuming the 2x and 3x chainsets and made so they line up with the middle of your cassette?

Should i have gone for the FC-M780?

Have you got the correct amount of spacers on the bb?

Hmm. I have used 2x SLX cranks on a 1x9 setup. I had to fiddle about with different thickness BB cup spacers to get the BB-mount guide (E13 hive) to line up with the chainring, but it worked out.

Yes, i think so, well the chain guide plate is the spacer, bb has not been removed, just cranks swapped over

Never had any bother with the Saint's i just took off - trying to shed a bit of weight!

Chainline should be the same as you can still fit a granny iirc on my xtr with the same gearing. 73bb I assume if just the one spacer? I presume whichever ring you have on has replaced the 38, unless of course thats the one your using. i.e. you haven't put it on the outside?

Yes, it's 73mm bb.

I have removed both rings and put on my old 32T.

The spider is slightly different to a 3x that im used to, you can't actually bolt a chainring on the outside.

yeah I think they are different but you should be able to get it to line up.

the 2x9 SLX cranks are basically 3x9 but ones but with steel pedal inserts and a bash guard and different middle ring.

Is the chin guide a BB mount in place of a 2.5mm spacer or is it ISCG mounted?

My chain guide is ISCG mounted, i was thinking it was bb mount - dumb ass! ๐Ÿ™‚

I have spoke to my lbs re the issue he reckons i should take out the 1, 2.5mm spacer in the drive side and see how that goes???

Will try that tomorrow.

The cranks you have are not designed as a 3x then with a ring removed like the SLX double ones, they're design purely as a 2x setup and hence don't have a middle ring position. The idea of that is to get a more even chainline with the two rings.

What this does mean though is that you won't get an optimal chainline with a single ring .

You might be able to make it work ok but you'd be better off using a 3x setup and using your single ring in the middle position.

Oh and make sure that if you do take out the spacer from the driveside that you move it to the non-driveside rather than omitting it altogether.

yes I was just about to add make sure you reinstall the 2.5mm spacer to the non-drive side.

You could also space the chain ring inwards with something like a set of shimano bash guard bolt shims and longer bolts but that is not ideal as it introduces more flex.

Could you space out the chainguide? Still won't give you optimal chainline but may help.

Sorted now! ๐Ÿ™‚

Removed spacer from drive side and re-installed it on the non-dirve side - Sorted and all gears work fine with no rubbing on chain guide!

Thanks for all the replies

Happy Riding one and all ๐Ÿ™‚

Alan.
