I have that new bike urge and am quite taken by an inbred. If it weighs around 27lb standard SLX build but gets used for the odd bit of racing, what would be a cost effective way of knocking a few lbs off? Given I'm rubbish and fairly unfit is saving weight that important for xc racing anyway or is bike handling/fitness more important? As an ex roadie this is new territory for me...cheers

Have a poo before you start. 😉 Much more effective than spending a wedge to save 30g on a rear mech.
Buy the Aluminium scandal instead? Much lighter.
Otherwise the standard answer is tyres, casette, saddle, seatpost, foam grips.
Borrow my 456SS, ride it for a few laps, jump onto the Inbred and see how light it's become in the meantime.
as well as the scandal take a look at the slx whippet. £999 at the moment. How much is the Inbred you are looking at?

If you're an ex roadie I would rate improving bike handling and skill as your number one priority..
Comparing my 456SS (with various XT bits on it all over) with my former MTB an Apollo "slammer" I conclude that Apollo use depleted uranium during construction.
Riding a heavy bike seems to a great way to make your Inbred feel like it is being towed behind a car while pedalling.
