I want a 456 Ti ( newest model) but im interseted in the Carbon frame.
Anyone own/rode one of these? Also i spoke to On One and they said the 456 is having a total revamp and they won't be getting anymore for 6 months. I thought this frame was supposed to be the best all round hard tail you can buy.

I have a carbon one (and a steel one, out on loan) and really, really rate the carbon one more than the steel one. Plenty of give in the right kind of way, and none when needed - sort of hard to explain but doesn't ride like my old steel one does, it's much more supple.

I've got a c456 and it's most excellent.

I love the geometry, the stiffness, the way it dampens trail chatter and especially the light weight.

There are a few things I would change if I was On-One, mainly cable routing and perhaps a slightly lower BB. Was it all the 456s they are revamping?

Being lucky enough to be able to afford two bikes ive been trying to decide if i should get a light weight hardtail or not. having ridden a very well specced 456 carbon round cannock on saturday ill be ordering one in the new year. Ive a felt virtue full suss already and love that but want the 456 for more smoother xc stuff. it was an absolute rocket and was far better than i was expecting on the bumpy stuff. was debating spending the money as i have spent a fair bit speccing my felt exactly how i want it but having ridden the 456 ive decided i NEED one lol

Love mine, so far - need to put more miles in but definitely flogging the full susser since I got it.

It is an oddly good ride - at low speed it's REALLY stiff - begs to be honked up steep inclines.

At speed, though, it seems to glide over the rough stuff and is amazingly forgiving, almost as if it's sentient and makes up for crappy line choices.

My build is 28Lbs with wotan's.

The trails are steep, rocky and switchbacky.

Dunno if On-One are still doing the un-decalled frames for £300 but that's what I got.

Only problem I had was rivets fouling the seat-tube interior which were bitches to file down - seems like a one off problem though.

Oh, they're, obviously, very ugly, but who cares?

I like mine... TBH I'm not the biggest fan of the geometry, it works but it still feels overly long in the back to me... Feels a bit more cumbersome than my Soul did yet doesn't climb as well either.

But, the plus sides are very plussy- lighter and stronger, and the tapered headtube gives you more fork options. The material and design just work really well, it's comparably compliant to my Soul (which translates to miles better rear tyre control than my mmmbop could manage) but weirdly feels slightly stiffer on the pedals.

So, not perfect, but very very good. I've stuck a 2 degree head angle reducer in mine and I run the fork fairly short so it's a little low in the middle sometimes but feels fab- fast, balanced and constantly confidence inspiring.

They're selling the red painted and black raw frames for £299 at the moment. I got the last of the in stock black raw on Friday night, but there's some reds still available. \Also looks like there's more stock coming in 20 Dec which you can pre order at that price.

I have had 1 since they first come out got an original pre order its a fantastic bike i used it to do the london to brighton offroad which is 75 miles, bontrager 24/12 12 hour enduro and used at plenty of trail centres. Its climbs brilliantly and decends just as well. I run it with a 130 fork but am going to try it with my 150 revs before i reduce them to see what its like .

Great fun bike imo

Definitely feeling tempted. THere's a nice build on the one I'm going to demo and the full bike is stonking value. Option is to switch stuff over from my current HT but it's only a 120mm (When did 120mm become 'a bit short!') fork. Most people seem to have 130 or 140. Anyone with a 120mm fork?

The frame can easily handle a 160mm fork as it's low at the front. So long as you're not doing DH oriented stuff 120mm will be fine and dandy. The angles are designed for it to be fine.

A revamp?

I thought they'd mistakenly ordered 3000 frames from the factory in Taiwan? I was expecting some massive C456 clearout at super bargain prices 🙁

Love mine, covered over 600 miles on it from rough XC to trail centre and it really does fly. Weighs 10.6 Kg's all in vs 13.2 Kg for my Cannondale Prophet with Lefty.

Revelation RLT's up front soak up most things thrown at it and as Lucien says, it seems to soak up bumps from the rear.

What would I change?
1. Def the cable routing. It is pretty poor.
2. Buy the matt finish as opposed to gloss, the gloss scratches very easily.

Ta. Would need a new seat post, front mech, cables and a reducer headset. Maybe I'll just get shot of the Hummer and see what I can get for the bits. Test rde first tho.

I've been told by On One that there not having the Ti 456 made by VN anymore, they cant make them quick enough. There changing the maker and giving it a revamp. It should back in the UK in 6 months or so.

I think im going to go for the carbon model ( frame only )
If you use CRC's £50 off deal when you spend £100 you can build a really nice bike for around £1500ish
My spec will be

XT brakes
Sram X0 cranks
X9 (2x10) gearing
Race face atlas bars
Thomson 4x 50mm stem
Fox float 140mm forks (second hand)
Hope pro2/mavic 819ust wheels
Im hoping it'll come in around 24lb

I predict closer to 26lb.

Mine is spot on 26lbs with Rev, pro2/crests, XT/SLX transmission, Formula The Ones and carbon bar/stem.

Have a carbon 456 and a scandAL. 456 is a great bike. I need to get my Fox's serviced , as feel they hinder, but what I can say is that it rides very light, not much between the pair in weight. Is a great all day bike. What I do find, is the scandAL is whippier in the tight singletrack and does climb much better. I have swopped off all the bits from my Trek EX9 to build the 456, so a full XT goupset, but have Goldtec hubbed /819 wheelset.
What I would change is to have a frame with less additional lugs for cables, although these are done for all the differing variations of frames. ScandAL cables are one piece outers and the 456 is split open. No big deal if you use sealed style cables.
Trek has been sold, so that answers the question on it staying.......Happy with both to be honest. Only a big pannicky on chainsuck, as have a small scuff already. Blame FoD grit for that.....

Will depend a bit on the other components... But tbh most bits you list there are slightly heavier than mine, which is weighed down with big tyres and a dropper seatpost and comes in bang on 25lbs. So I reckon you'll see 25 or 26lbs on the scale.

Not that you should stress over that 😉 Nice strong kit you've listed there, and still hardly heavy.

Had a few changes since then though- that's before the head angle reducer went in, and it's got different bars, pedals and tyres on it now.

Looks good mate. Is it matt or gloss? Someone said the gloss marks easy. What size is it?
Im 5"10 and was going to go for a 18"

Im not keen on the finishing kit on the full build Alex. Those wheels look heavy to me

It's the gloss/naked, and yep, it does mark pretty easily- though it scratches/dulls rather than chipping, which is good. The finish is classic On One 😉

If I stripped my hummer (oh eer!) I'd have

RS Rev Teams 120mm
SQ Taper RF Turbines
XT shifters/cassette/chain/mechs
Thomson Stem/711 Sunline bars
Either Hope/Mavic 719 or Hope/DT Swiss 5.1 wheels
XT brakes.

I'd need a new post (dropper preferred) and F/mech. Just dithering over whether the reba is going to be man enough for the job. It is a 20mm bolt thru tho and it's an ace fork, have the same on my ST4.

Give the reba's a go. I reckon they'll be ace. Got a mmmbop which is sort of similar to the 456 and run the forks at 120 pretty much all the time. If after that you still think they're not up to the job then get some new ones. If you don't have a front mech yet maybe take the opportunity to try running 1x for a few weeks.

What do owners recommend for the headset? I'd ideally not want to cut my 200mm steerer tube, so wanting a high stack headset. 1 1/8 steerer, 140mm Fox Talas.

Already have a high stack Da Bomb Da Reaction AL off my Summer Season

So, can I just buy a 1.5 to 1 1/8 head tube reducer shim for the bottom cup? I'd heard of people having issues with the headset fit or something like that? am I going to have problems if I start trying to adapt stuff, rather than just going for a Hope 'mix and match' or the On One branded.

Alex

I initially ran 120mm Reba cw maxle on my 456Ti, while fine, it's so much better with the Thor 140mm's I have now.

Would assume that the carbon will probably be the same.

If we can arrange a FoD trip over the hols you could try it.

What's rubbish about the cable routing then?
- Mr Blobby, look at Northwinds's picture - that pretty much explains it.

I'm running my 456 with an Alfine and 130mm Tora's as a winter ride, and I'm having to take the cables for Alfine round the left of the bars and under the top tube, and with the rear brake, I'm running the cable along the down tube, but there are only 2 (or 3?) cable fixing points and I've used zip ties on the caliper cable - the front mech would need to follow the same path if I had one...So, it's functional rather then asthetic, as per Northwinds pics

The front cable guides are waaaay too far back tbh. And the extra set that gives the choice of hose runs to the rear caliper are pretty ugly, shame they're not easily removable (might remove mine anyway). TBH the entire bike reeks of function over form, and I'm OK with that but I think it could be a bit more formy without being any less functiony.

Oh, and Rebas at 120mm would be very nice IMO... I like the flexibility of my u-turns but it spends probably 4/5ths of its time at 120mm. Depends what you want it to do, it does get slightly hairy on big steps as the length and lowness adds up to a slight lack of ground clearance.

Good advice thanks. In terms of functionality over form, I'm not too concerned as it'll not look as nice as my Hummer, and it'll be covered in mud most of the time.

Can probably get a reducer headset and a seatpost + frame for the eBay value of the Cove so I'll tell the missus it's cost neutral 😉

Hmm, now I think of it I've got a Smoothie headset for a C456 in the garage, not especially likely to refit it... I was going to keep it for when I inevitably fall out with the frame for no reason at all and sell it in a fit of pique, but if you're interested drop me an email on andrew@blackjack.f9.co.uk

Slender stays etc- only less ugly than the last at best IMO.

I've swapped all of the bits from a Cove Stiffee that I have ridden for 5 years, most recently with fox float 140mm forks. Ridden the 456 for the first time this evening and it's brilliant! Feels like its got rear suspension compared to the Stiffee. Feels a fair bit longer and lower at the front keeping more weight further forwards which makes it a better climber and felt great descending too, just a little harder to pick the front wheel up over stuff. Just a body position thing I'm sure...

So that's my summary compared to a similar geometry ally bike. Did you get one? Mine was 250, seemed like a bargain!

Yes - in red only. £10.

No idea what that looks like on the cheaper red or yellow frames btw.

Robhughes - I know - I've been hovering over the buy button for a week now - but the looks just dont - well "look". I'll probably get one anyway as I'm not bothered once it's muddied.

The random seatpost restriction / obstruction sounds like more of a pain - that's just from random posts though.

They should have put cable guides on for full length outers, but that's about all I can fault with it.
