I've got a carbon fishing rod from about 1987. Does that count?

Also some Woodman bar ends

All still in use

I was using a 10 year old* easton carbon post on a full susser, until I changed frame & the seatpost size changed.
Still got it in the garage... not in a rush to use it though.

*or at least I was told it was orignal to the bike, but I owned/used it for the 7 years

My Madone frame/forks are 2004, the seatpost (USE Alien) is 2002, that must have done about 50,000 miles, scary!

I still service a Giant Cadex from 96? or thereabouts, no problems with it at all.
And a MCM full sus come to think of it, or at least did until it was stolen last year.
Will-your XTC is an '06, not '05 😉

Is anyone still riding the old GT LTS / STS carbon frames?

*possible pedant content but not completely sure if I'm right*

Isn't all carbon the same age?

It may now be in the form of a bike part but surely it was all created at the Big Bang?

Couldn't that arguably be applied to everything?

Just noticed a couple of GT STS carbon bikes from the 90's on ebay! They are obviously out there still. Probably owned by far busier people who don't have time to ponce about on mtb forums.

I could be wrong but I don't think that's true. Sure all energy and matter occurred as a result of the big bang but I don't think carbon atoms appeared until some time afterwards.

Assuming the underlying issue here is how long carbon lasts, I have still got some Carbon Windsurfing masts that date back to c1995 that are working well. They get some massive stress through them as well although are a lot thicker than mountain bike tubes.

My dads fly fishing rod may be some sort of carbon / fibre glass mix and that might be from the 80s – what is the oldest bit of carbon fibre sporting equipment out there I wonder?

I've still got this piece of cycling history, although in a different guise as a single speed knock-about bike. I don't fancy riding it too far from home in case it disintegrates...

Giant Cadex- circa 1990.

Carbon is a compound so it has not been around from the BB but a little later, true.

BTW, I've still got a Trek Y11 from 98 but i don't ride it, nothing wrong with it though...

Not bike related, but I know a guy who still races a 1981 McLaren MP4/1 in historic meets (for McLaren!!). Chassis is original and still as strong as the day it was made!! Binned it once too!!

Carbon lasts, get over it and enjoy using what you've got!!

For some reason my road bars (which are about 5 years old) give me more cause for concern than any other parts I use. No creaks, no cracks, not silly light, just keep considering changing them for no reason!

Absolutely not! I've got a Proflex 857 (with a carbon swingarm) from 1997 that until recently was the wife's bike. Still going strong.
