Howdo. I've got an old 2007 26inch wheel inbred that I want to set up for a flat road commute. I'll be looking at keeping the 18t cog on the rear and looking at a 44 up front. The question is, will I get the chain to fit? Has anybody put road friendly ratios on theirs and if so, what you running?

Are you looking for a magic ratio to dispense with a tensioner? I assume it's not got adjustable dropouts?

Slot dropout. I picked up a 39 tooth ring a while back as it was pennies, just to try it but it wouldn't fit. I forget how many links I was running with a 33 ring up front but adding another rendered the chain too long. Hoping a 42 or a 44 will fit whilst running 18 at the back but want to be sure.

Should be able to run any size ring if it's a slot dropout? Unless I'm missing something ๐Ÿ™‚

Don't understand the question or why a 39 didn't fit (unless it was road BCD).

Larger chainring may foul chainstay?

A long time ago I ran a 48:16 briefly. But then I switched to a more sensible 45:18 so I could actually pull away from traffic lights!

Old v braked version. Shimano mtb cranks with spocket on outside. Probably run with a spacer on the BB to shift it outwards. Rear spocket right on the outside of the freehub.

Spooky, it's probably me that's missing something... 🙄 I thought the same but couldn't get it to work.

Anyway, it took until after posting on here to realise my old Whyte still has a 3x9 set up on it. Whipped the 44 tooth ring off that, stuck it on the inbred and fitted a chain with no issues whatsoever so a 44 tooth ring on order from sjs.

Al, in answer to your question, when running 39/18 I had to have the chain tug wound right out so once the chain wore in and stretched I'd have basically run out of dropout if that makes any sense? Probably doesn't, I'm struggling to articulate the problem here! Anyway, no problem anymore, quite why I didn't twig that the solution was sat in my garage all this time I do not know! 🙄😆

Glad you sorted it, once the chain wears a tad and everything settles in, you should have enough adjustment in the dropouts to remove one link. Failing that, a half link would work if you are not using a narrow wide ring.
