Hey all,

Im off for a few months of bike adventures in NZ later this year and was wondering if anyone here has done similar?

I'm after some advice or recommendations for what to do about travel insurance?

I have totally sports insurance which covers for general injury/broken bones but was wondering if anyone had gotten any more standard style travel insurance that covers them and their bike for the whole trip?

I'll be buying a van and travelling/backpacking around while I'm there.

Cheers in advance

C

I ended up joining the CTC and using their insurance to cover my bike, and then travel insurance for me - it was by far the cheapest and most comprehensive way I could find the cover. (6 month trip, back in 2014)

Yep never found a travel insurance that covers bikes of any value, any high value item is on y home insurance with a travel allowance on that. As for NZ any good travel policy should cover you they have a great medical system if you have an accident. If you got hat way make sure you read the T&C's as they bits you are at risk for is damage in the airline and theft while you are travelling/leaving it in places some might not cover

I'm 1 year into a 2 year version of this. We ended up with a very big van.. it's actually a bus that we converted into a motorhome. Our insurance for that covers the bikes... well part of their value.

I did the same earlier this year on an NZ trip. I have house insurance with pedal cover so the bike was covered that way. For my personal cover I used insure and go.

Your bikes will need to be show room clean also.

Thanks all thats really helpful stuff.

I do have good coverage with my home insurance but think I may have to extend that to cover NZ/Aus as it only covers Europe at the moment.

Yeah I heard the bike needs to be proper clean and that new tyres and shoes are needed etc

Nope new stuff not needed but it helps a bit. Scrub the tyres same with shoes, then make sure your bike is clean to look at, no grass or leaves etc and under the saddle and inside the steerer is mud free.

It's a while since I've used them but Insure and Go's annual policy worked out at the same price as a couple of months cover and was pretty comprehensive (there are many levels of cover and options for high-risk activities). I found the same as others about not covering the full value of bikes though. I think in the end I just accepted I was going to take a bit of a hit if it got stolen.

Pedal cover had no issue with me buying bikes in the USA and them being covered under the regular policy as per their interpretation of the policy guidelines.
