On longish rides, what's this caused by and how does one go about preventing it?

'tis a bit disconcerting when your old fella can'nae be felt! ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

Get your saddle / riding position sorted ASAP - this way lies impotence.

Its caused by crushing of the (pudendal??) nerve that runs along behind your bollox. You should not be putting any pressure on this bit - all the weight should be on your sit bones at the back of your pelvis.

probably too late for me then guv'ner! ๐Ÿ˜ฏ It's been something I've had problems with ever since I started riding long days in the saddle, just kind of put up with it (for 18 years or so ๐Ÿ˜† ) Guess I'll go get a wriggler count and see what's what... Oh,and get my saddle position sorted as well!

It happens on long rides because your position is sub-optimal and as your hands/arms/shoulders get tired you slouch and compress the dingus nerve.

Sit further back, learn to stretch out on your bike, and get someone to check your position when you are tired..

been thinking about the snip anyway (wife and I don't want kids), so wouldn't be totally disastrous to me if there was an issue... kind of anyway...

Might book into Mosquito for a bike fit, they're just up the road and I'm sure it'll help out, especially as I'm planning to do a fair bit of riding these next few months!

ahhh... ๐Ÿ˜ณ

yep, I knew that, honestly! ๐Ÿ˜†

Well, no problems with the old fella then, he stands to attention when required (and often when not ๐Ÿ˜‰ )

I'll just slouch off now and be quiet...

I only experienced this after doing a coast to coast ride carrying a rucksack (extra weight). Couldn't feel much for a week or so after which was worrying! Cetainly won't carry a heavy pack on my back for long rides again.

My mini me goes numb on climbs as I tend to lean forward putting pressure where it shouldn't be. Put a bell air saddle on which helped a bit and have just fitted a shorter stem to see if that helps my position

I had a problem with this. The numbness was a problem but the pins and needles when the blood came back into the lad almost made up for it. Specialized BG saddles sorted me out
