[Closed] Number of bikes in the past 10 years

A Facebook reminder popped up informing me that a picture of an old Enduro was 10 years old, which left me pondering how many bikes or frames I'd gone through. The majority of my swaps were just frames, but even then, I came up with 16 mountain bikes and 3 road/cross bikes in that period.

How does this compare to the rest of you?

2001 Specialized Enduro!
GT Avalanche
Stumpjumper HT frame
Beone Hornet frame
Specialized FSR XC
Carbon Zaskar frame
Ibis Mojo frame
Specialized Pitch
OnOne Scandal frame
Commencal Meta
Orange Five frame
newer style Scandal frame
Specialized Stumpjumper FSR frame
Specialized Stumpjumper HT frame (bought together)
Singular Swift frame
Specialized Enduro

Interesting the times in which I had least money seem to coincide with buying the most frames, maybe it was a coping mechanism!

Niner EMD (Stolen)
Orange ST4 (Broken)
Sanderson Breath (with bits from the Orange)
But I can now say four. 8)
Marin Nail Trail 27.5" (With NOT ONE old part on)

I was sort of hoping to be middling in this. My plan to help justify a new road bike has backfired.

I started 2008 with an Orange 5 and a Kona Dr Dew. Since that time, I've had:

Pace RC305 frame
Cannondale Bad Boy
Cotic Soul frame
Trek 1.1 (road)
Kinesis Decade (road)
Cotic X frame
Cotic Escapade frame
Stooge Mk1 frame
Cotic Soul 275 frame
Kinesis 4S Disc (road) frame
Surly Ogre frame
Surly Straggler frame
Brompton
Transition Scout frame

I've usually swapped frames rather than bought / sold bikes, tending to keep 2-3 at a time, so perhaps the turnover isn't quite as dramatic as it seems!

Heckler
Chameleon frame
DB alpine frame
Decade Virsa frame
Yeti ASR5
EDIT: Bfe
Soul 26 frame
Nukeproof Mega frame
Turner Burner
Soul 275 frame
Canyon Spectral

+

Giant OCR
Tripster

If it went back 15 years it'd be twice as long.

Thank you for sharing Chakaping.

That's a new bike every 100 days, for 10 years, I don't think if that sounds better or worse.

Priorities and an eye for a bargain.

And I was earning very well at the height of my turnover.

Recent innovations in MTB geometry mean bikes fit me much better than they used to, so I am keeping bikes for longer now.

Yeah, I used to buy a lot of frames from here. If you flog the old one it's a relatively cheap way of having a new toy to play on every few months through summer 🙂

And I totally agree on the geometry front, I'm 6'6", nothing really fit (without looking ridiculous) before 29ers!

A lot of mine were bought complete and the bits sold off to subsidise the frame - then built up with my existing parts.

Ironically, I don't even like building bikes up that much.

I'm not even sure I actually get what you mean by that... tired brain cannot compute today.

I've never been of the mind to continually turn over new bikes after mere months or so- and crucially, I've never earned enough in the last decade (or ever) to indulge that on a whim. Guess I don't understand MTB 'priorities'over life's priorities. The last 5 years of my life have involved- in no particular order- learning to drive, relocating to another part of the UK, 3 jobs, marriage, a child and a mortgage on a new home. Truly surprised at the numbers some are itemising here. A different world! Still love riding as much as i ever did so at least that's one thing that seemingly never changes..

Don't assume lots of bikes = lots of money

As a couple we're probably as bad* as Chakaping 😳 but in my defence Mrs A is a rider too, but neither of us are big earners, most of them bought/built second hand and I've still probably spent less than a 'normal' family spend on mediocre cars, and waaay less than some people with only 1 or 2 'posh' bikes.

Guess I don't understand MTB 'priorities'over life's priorities.

I live in a modest house, have a boring 10 year old car, no TV subscription, cheap phone etc. I normally buy decent dependable and reliable bike gear too, not blingy expensive stuff unless it works out cheaper in the long run. I don't understand people that spend £50 a month on TV or phones when they could be spending it on replacing worn out tyres 😆
I ride 6.7 days a week, riding bikes is fairly high up on my priority list, it's not necessarily wrong, just a different list 😀

* a fair few of them have snapped (11, I went through a phase...), some stolen (4), some sold, some donated, but mostly I keep bikes for a long time (5-10years, some longer), unless I don't get on with them at all in which case they get moved on quite quickly. A few of mine are retro/vintage restorations so cost peanuts in comparison to modern stuff. (ie: a lot less than a decent fork, and in some cases less than the cost of a pair of carbon bars)

Well as it's only 10 years, that's a manageable list.

DMR Trailstar LT (still have it)
Boardman Carbon Elite road bike (still have it)
Boardman Team CX bike (still have it)
Spesh SX Trail II
Voodoo Canzo
Cove Hummer
On-one C456
Cotic Solaris Mk1
Orange ST4 (broke)
Orange ST4 mk2
Pace 405
Trek Stache (non chubby)
Trek Stache (still have)
Cotic Rocket 26
Nukeproof Mega AM
Bird Aeris Mk1 (still have)
Pyga 29-110
Cotic Flare Max (still have)
Cotic Solaris Max (still have and anyway it's my daughters really)
Ibis Mojo3 (still have)

Compared to Cha****ng, I feel as if my purchasing strategy is still on the right side of a mental illness 😉

6.7 days? must be nice! your backside must be like granite 😀

I don't understand people that spend £50 a month on TV or phones when they could be spending it on tyres

that is very true- and i fall into that sodding category! guess i'll have to look at the 40th for the next justifiable big spend... only 6 years of window shopping to go woo!

Well most weeks it's 7 days a week, but obviously I miss some occasionally so 6.7 seemed a good estimate 🙂

Could that be the douchey-est comment of the month? Certainly a challenger.

Go on then, what are the 'life's priorities' that I've missed by having a few bicycles?

Erm, I've just remembered a couple more.

2009 Kona Jake
2014 Boardman Team CX

My typical cost to change bikes is £200 to £400, though often it's cost-neutral.

Quick bit of maths suggests all that chopping and changing has cost me £10-£15k over the past decade. Though that's exclusive of spares & kit of course.

Well, hold your (many) horses there... I didn't actually mean it in THAT way- but i can see out of context, it sounds like I'm saying I'm somehow above all that and bitter to those with big stables. I'm not. Tom, believe me if i could have put more effort in I'm sure I could have got a few more bikes under my belt- my life has taken a different path. I spent 8 years drumming and recording music. A very expensive pastime. It's not a criticism or a comment on other's choices- I'm not here to piss you or anyone off.

Go on then, what are the 'life's priorities' that I've missed by having a few bicycles?

for clarity, it should have said MY life's priorities. My mistake.

Cotic Soul 275 (still got)

So only two actual new bikes, all others second hand, or frames with bits swapped around.

Frightening really as all but one of those were actually in the last 5 years...........
