I'm trying to track down a squeak. One of those random 'shift my weight and alter my pedal stroke but still can't identify the source' kinda squeaks.

Pedals are obviously one possible source so I was planning on whipping them off because they're 'user-serviceable'.

Haha! If you've got the specialist tools for a set of damn pedals. Say what?

Anyone got them? Are they worth it? At this point I'm thinking of swapping them out for some good old Wellgos that are somewhere in the shed and diagnosing from there.

But - squeak aside - they're £30 pedals. Yet need special tools to service.

Am I alone in thinking that's a bit nuts?

Also - I'm not looking for squeak-tracking advice as that's a separate can of worms 🙂

Is it worth it, probably not as the tools are not far off the price of a new set. I only have them as I have fancy Horizon Ti Flats....and i was reeeeally ****ing bored during lockdown,doing every conceivable bit of unnecessary maintenance i could think of.. They work a treat and get the job done.

And change the pedals over if you are trying to track down a creak first though

@dumbbot Thanks buddy. Pedal swap for diagnosis is top of my list. I do like the Evos. So what you're saying is that I can pay *almost* as much for a service kit as for a new pair...

I've had an awful year for mechanicals. I've got Raceface Chester on my other bike and they've taken an absolute hammering for almost three years. So as much as I like the Evos I think that - if they need a service - I might just whack a set of Chesters on instead.

Admittedly my Chesters have a lot of body missing. But they're still grippy and a good platform so I see those as war scars to be proud of 😁

You don't actually need the special tool, but it'll make it a lot easier.

There's also a trick you can use to sort of speed-service all pedals of this sort of design- unscrew the end cap, squish some clean grease into the hole, refit the end cap and as you tighten it down, it'll push the new grease through the pedal. You have to do it a few times, and you'll see the old grease get pushed out of the seal at the crank end- once it comes through clean, you're all good.

If you diagnose the creek to the pedals I'm happy to lend the tools to you. You'll just need the rebuild kit.

On the flipside I have a pair of Nukeproof electron pedals which I had done precisely nothing to for...eeer 5years+ and they are still going without fuss.

All in I am a fan of nukeproof pedals...fancy ones or plastic.

You don't need the tools. You need a 1/4" socket set and some 10.5mm (I will check) straight bar off eBay eg. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/291638105580

Thanks all. First stop this weekend then is to try all of the above.

@dumbbot, If needs be then I might well take you up on that offer as I've been more than happy with the pedals so far. Thanks muchly.

Of course it might not be the pedals at all. In which case I'll bang my head with frustration, crack a beer open and ask God what I did to deserve an untraceable creak. Drunkenly.

If you have a thin socket you’ll be able to get the axle & bearings out of the pedal with no problem.

I’d start with taking it apart, checking for play / wear and rebuild with new grease.

If you aren’t getting play when it’s rebuilt, chances are the bushing is ok thus not needing any special tools. You can also use a drill bit (11mm I think) to get the bushing out which you may have in your toolbox already.

I’d start with taking it apart, checking for play / wear and rebuild with new grease.

This...First time I had a creak a simple clean and regrease sorted it. And again the only reason I replaced the bushings and bearings was boredom they really didn't need done( although do feel really good now).
The end caps did need re-tightened as the new bearings bedded in.

Offer still stands though if you want the tools to service the pedals, just drop me a line.

Hmm my bushing came out with the axle. The fact there is a removal tool makes me think the bush needs replacing. Anyone seen just bushes for sale as the bearings, end caps and pins are all fine.

Yes @nixie it sounds like your bushing does need replaced. Even with the tool, it can be tight enough to get out of the pedal body so it def shouldn’t fall out.

While you are that deep inside the pedal, it’s prob worth just changing the bearings and seals.

Yeah think I will, when they come back into stock. The seals are a joke though. They don't stay in place in my experience.
