So I've asked this questions at least 2 ways already but can I decide? Can I f***!
Sight is ordered...but 2 months wait...
Range is available, and I've been offered an extra £150 discount for the inconvenience, which means I can get a brand new bike with £650 off. Clearly overkill for my normal riding, BUT if it's going to be fun and get uphill well enough who cares!
Weight difference of the frames is minimal, but with heavier shock and heavier wheels we're looking at just over a pound heavier overall. I might consider selling the wheels straight away and getting lighter ones as I'm a streak of piss and would get away with it.
However the head tube angle is 66 degrees on the sight which is not far off a downhill bike - the sight is 67.5 degrees. I have no idea how this will affect the riding / climbing abilities.
What forks are on each?
Both have Pikes. The sight has Pikes RCT3 solo air with 140mm travel. The Range has Pikes listed as RCT dual position air - not sure the difference apart from the they are 160mm travel.
At the rear the sight has Cane Creek CB Inine. The range has Cane Creek Double Barrel Air CS. This is a more expensive shock but quite heavy as shocks go and for the life of me I can't work out what the difference would be in use, since the DB Inline aims to do the same thing without the piggyback.
Head angle will be fine, 66 deg is no problem for climbing with.
I would have the range but if you are not going to hit any downhill runs or go to the alps then it might be a bit much. 66 Is fine though.
I'd love to go to the Alps sometime but no imminent plans due to young child! Love going downhill as fast as I can so I'm sure I will appreciate the travel, but the Sight would probably be all I need the vast majority of the time. I seem to do fine with 120mm at the moment although I can see the need for more - I have usually bottomed out the rear RP23 shock despite it being set up for a heavier rider (I can't change it without sending it away).
Decisions!

Volume spacers?
I'm sure I could do something about it if I wasn't buying a new bike! It feels pretty good generally, but I just notice at the end of the ride that I have usually knocked the rubber ring off, which presumably means I bottomed out...
Definitely go the Range with the discount IMO. I've never regretted having a slightly burlier bike on the climbs, you just get fitter to compensate, however you'll be pleased you went with it on the downs!
Dual pikes don't have the tokens so they can feel very linear IME
Interesting the next model down has Solo Air pikes so the dual airs are considered an improvement by Norco. Also Monarch RC3 versus Cane Creek Double Barrel on the lower model. I could go with this although the wheels aren't as good.
Where are these on discount at please.
There's only one UK supplier - Evans
You can get tokens for the dual position Pikes if it's a make or break decision.
get a test ride and decide then, the Range is awesome.
To be honest it sounds like you don't really know what you want, so I'd agree with those suggesting that you do some test rides before parting with such a large sum.
Test ride is a nice idea. Not going to happen unless I wait until March for the Sight and then compare the two. Even then from previous experience I think it takes time to gel with a new bike.
I don't think there is the hugest of difference between the two options, apart from that I can get the Range now. Since I love pelting it downhill I can't see the Range being a bad idea. Might just have to take a punt. It's only money after all.
As far as I'm aware you can't get tokens for dual pikes. The air shafts don't take them.
My feeling on that particular part of the equation is that a)Pikes will probably be so much better than what I currently have that it will be awesome whatever, and b) taking travel down to 130mm might be useful uphill
I'd go for then Range for the shock alone, know two people who've had grief with the inline shocks. One was quoted 'they are shit' by a shock tuning company. Both were replaced with the DB shock. Mate had first ride on it yesterday and stated 'like night and day, the inline is garbage'.
Interesting since according to most the DB Inline is the bogs dollox, seemingly the in-vogue shock at the moment. Alternatively I can go one level down on the Range and get it with Solo Air Pikes and a Monarch Plus RC3 at the back.
I've got the 2013 Sight. Awesome bike, but if I could do it again I'd get the Range. Way I see it is in the old days, more travel meant major compromises in terms of weight and ability to ride uphill. With the modern bikes, your 160mm will do pretty much the same as your 140mm on the ups, but the longer travel and slacker angles will allow you to batter it more on the downhills. Unless you're focused on KOMs for climbs, just go with the 160mm, you won't regret it!
^^ What he said.
And maybe go down one model to get Pike/Monarch Plus combo, then spend the money saved on upgrading wheels/tyres 🙂
I have a 2013 Sight and it is top banana, if that helps. 160mm is a little to much for me and if you get some decent wheels etc you could lose a kilo ,which isn't to be sniffed at. Depends what you're into i guess

They arn't "sh*t" - they just don't work very well with quite a few bikes.
If it's a shorter travel bike, they seem to be a decent choice, but otherwise there are probably better options.
My first one crapped itself, and the second one wasn't very well when it went back. It didn't work very well for my application (reasonably high leverage ratio).
I'd be inclined to go with the lower Range and get one with the Monarch Plus, mainly because I don't like the dead feel of the DB Air which is a trait of the shock IME.
Well I have taken the plunge and bought a Range Carbon 7.1....cannot wait!
Sweet, just checked it out and I wouldn't change a thing on that bike. Well jel!
That was my logic - the completely not true idea that I was saving money by spending more, on the basis that if I spend less I will only end up upgrading it...
You could go for the Sight and get a £20 offset bushing to slacken the angle to match the Range.
You then have a bike with a better (?) fork, that can take the tokens, but is aggro enough for DH duties.
Too late! (see previous post...)
