I have built this 20" Scandal up over the last few weeks, sprayed the white bits myself including the forks to make it look slightly less like the 'normal' Scandals.
The forks are coil-sprung Magura Phaons, so pretty heavy but service-free, and I can run them with Magura firm-tech brakes which I like for the looks (similar to the old Pace forks brake mounts), and I can use my very old, ca. 1997 front wheel with pre-parallax XTR hubs (never trued).
Stem and bars are Syntace
Saddle by Charge
Rather hefty but nice 737 SPDs
and at the rear
Rohloff hub with straight cable routing
SLX disc brakes mounted through a
Monkey bone
a very old but 'beautiful' XTR quick release, and on the other side
a Surly tugnut.
Weight is 27 lbs, and a quick spin in front of the house was fine, but then who would admit if it wasn't after having spent quite some time having put the bike together.
thats quite nice in a ugly way ๐
Wow that's a shite paint design.
Wow that's a shite paint design.
+1
give the paint a break.
i like the fact it its a slightly quirky build.
Needs some brown Lizard Skinz North Shore lock-on's.
But I think tis nice.
I quite like its individuality
what are the purpley-brown stripes? looks like electricians' tape
looks like it,s been done by a 5 year old.
sorry but the truth is often painfull.
why have rim brake on the front and disc on the rear....? surely you want the more powerful brake on the front (i know that the Magura hydros are powerful but they are known for eating through rims).
really gopping paint job, sorry. too much going on.
enjoy!
Love it!
Rohloff + HS33 + rear Shimano disc brake FTW!! (Exact same brake/gear setup as my Thorn, but your firmtech mounts are soooooo cool).
The paintjob/colour scheme is fantastic: it brings to mind 'Orky' which is one for the geeks on here (which includes me...)
well you successfully achieved the not 'normal' brief, kudos sven. ๐ฏ
Is it just me, or is a paint job designed to be not just uber-niche, but dare I say unique, not the very living embodiment of "niche"? I was expecting to see a Specialized rockhopper or some such bike here.
I was assuming the non-niche was meant to be ironic.
That paint scheme is disturbing
and I can run them with Magura firm-tech brakes which I like for the looks
Personally I go for brakes that actually work, but hey, whatever floats your boat
Whats the paint job about? Why are there 'random' position/size black stripes within the brown bits
The brown looks too purpley
Otherwise it looks like some sort of take on one of those bamboo bikes (brown and black)
If you'd just stuck to white and black (like the headtube/top tube/downtube it could have looked alright
Also why have you got your brakes set up Euro style/other way around?
What a shame, the bike didn't pass the majority of the STW members's taste, ah well...
The front brakes are what I had on my previous bike, no need to spend money, some people would say the Magura rim brakes have more 'feel' to them than disc brakes; the rims are Mavic ceramic and have been through three alps crossings, but that doesn't mean they don't fall apart next weekend.
Some of the white bits (mainly at the right seat stay) are to cover up where I took the hacksaw to remove the cable guides that I didn't need. The brown is indeed - I dare admit it - electricians' tape.
> Also why have you got your brakes set up Euro style/other way around?
Because I am 'Euro'...
No, I AM EURO!
Ignore the victims fella. Your bike's no looker, but I bet it's run to ride.
TBH it would be loads better without the brown tape...
I like this. It isn't pretty particularly but it looks lived-in. ๐
Agreed with takisawa that brown grips would be a good plan though.
drop the brown tape and paint the BB white and it'll be fine.
some people would say the Magura rim brakes have more 'feel' to them than disc brakes
that's your rims being bent..... ๐
At least no-one will want to steal it.
