I lived there for 3 years and was on the road as a penniless monk servant for an old Sadhu for a lot of that time visiting remote pilgrimage spots from high Himalaya to the jungles of the south. Still go back often. What sort of thing do you like? Nature or spiritual/cultural? India is a mind blowing place...

If you want to avoid other tourists get a motorbike.

I enjoyed the South, but there's no point me recommending anywhere as everywhere I went there were at least two tourists. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Work colleague just returned from a two week trip after just one week, he would have taken a flight back the next day if it was available.
Taj Mahal region

amongst the issues were fearless monkey prowling the hotel one snatched his glasses which were tied to his head, so monkey got the lenses leaving the arms and string behind. ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

I am sure there are lovely places though ๐Ÿ˜€

Holidayed there for a month, didn't get Delhi belly once!
Neither did the missus, and we weren't particularly careful.

Had a Burger King at Stansted on the way home though, and ejected almost all fluids from my body some fifteen minutes later.

My experience of India was that I was treated like a tourist no matter where I went - I suspect this was a function of being a white guy with a rucksack. Found it impossible to stop in the street anywhere without someone trying to sell you there goods/services. I had very few actual conversations with Indian people and ended up spending most of my time with other Europeans or with Tibetans.

The only folk I know who have avoided tourist traps in India either travelled with an Indian friend (and stayed with their family) or spent a few months working in the same place and become part of a community.

Kolkata (Calcutta) and Darjeeling are brilliant.

Astonishing country, well worth visiting for an extended trip. I'd say don't rule out all the touristy bits - they're touristy for a reason i.e. beautiful, mind-boggling etc. Where to go depends entirely on what you're after. Highlights for me have been Mumbai, Hampi, Kerala backwaters, Jaisalmer, Udaipur, Varanassi, Taj, Jodhpur, night trains, Darjeeling and nearby multi-day trekking. Less obvious but still fascinating places include Hyderabad, Kodaikanal and Madurai. You might get ill, you might not. If you do, it'll probably only last a day or two and it'll hopefully be outweighed by the overall thrill and awe. Be warned though - it's definitely not a place for everyone.

Brilliant country.
A violent assault on the senses, and absolutely bat shit mental, but brilliant.
As above, you'll be treated as a tourist wherever you end up.
