someone suggested to me that if you use dust caps, you run the risk of unscrewing the core when you take the cap off. Which could end in a latex mess.
Surely only the hammiest of fists would achieve this? or something more likely than I think?
Any disadvantages of not using dust caps? other than getting a dusty valve.
This is probably going to end up on BS of the week thread. You will need an exceedingly hammy fist to do that.
I struggle to unscrew the cores as it is - they get glued up by sealant. So I'd say.......No
Considering you need pliers or the correct tool to normally remove them i would suggest a plastic valve cap is unlikely to do that!
Oh Mr Hammy-Fist here, done that twice!! on new valve/wheels. Once you've done it, you learn to tighten up valve cores before having to remove dust caps. Hope nobody heard me.
Then leave the cap on to do its's job.
Done it myself with Stans valves. Doesn't cause a latex mess, just a flat tyre and a peeved Northwind. Just tightened them up a bit more to avoid it.
Just don't use valve caps, they don't do anything on a presta valve!
Yup - did it the other day.
Stans valve; now with a tightened core.
Happened to me too ๐ณ
Never happened to me, and I've really been faffing with bike cleaning/changing stan's etc...nope, load of old tosh. Oh, I have the mavic valves that came with the rims...if that helps??
Yup, seen it happen a few times (at least once to me!). If the core works loose and the cap is on tight, it can definitely happen. Just check the cores are tight every now and then.

If the core works loose, then the cap is the only thing keeping it sealed ๐
