This used to be extremely common in Spain. Used to have a dress code in the dining room. No shorts, no lycra.
Some places it was even long sleeve shirts in the evening.

Now that is what you call free advertising ! Shame the Guardian misspelled "jandals" they are normally on top of their research. They even remember to put the definite article in front of the north island and the south island, a point lost on most tourists.
