[Closed] New wheels/Xd or standard Shimano hub

Will be used as my tougher wheel set, I will have the original set for lighter duties and it has an xd 10-42 cassette.
What are the downsides of using a Shimano 11-42 cassette other than top speed?
I will be using it to climb as well as uplifts.
Any advice appreciated

Chain line is worse on Shimano but if you want to climb steep stuff they now do an 11speed 11-46 casette as do Sunrace .

If you are swapping wheelsets, would advise swapping the cassettes over or having specific chains for each cassette. As one cassette/chain wears it won't play with the other cassette (jumping, skipping, etc).

If you run different types of cassette then you will need to re-index your gears every time you swap.

I've run Sram and Shimano on the same bike and the indexing setup was fine.

Sram is lighter, wider range but more £.

If you want a light cassette/10t sprocket/have cash then Sram

If you don't care about weight/11t sprockets/do care about cash then Shimano

The spacing's identical so what really controls whether you need to change indexing is the exact location, and that varies a little from one hub design to the next anywya, so it's not so simple I think.

Get the XD one, and then just swap cassette? It's what I'm going to do, only takes a moment to spin a XD cassette off and transfer it.

That's a good idea Northwind, saves me buying another cassette and chain:)

Do xd hubs have the same problem as shimano where the cassette bites into the splines making the cassette a pain to remove.

I reckon the Sram gx cassette is the best option in terms of weight and price trade off.

Noticeably lighter than same wheel with xt, not a great deal of £ more.

Andy - they screw onto a thread on the driver instead. Need doing up tight. I wouldn't want to keep swapping them over, personally.

Nah, they have a different problem where if you don't use the ideal tool and do it right, you strip the splines and end up having to cut your £100 casette off the freehub. Also, SRAM didn't grease some of them from the factory so they could end up pretty much welded on.

Plenty of copper grease and use a torque wrench to tighten to the correct torque.
