[Closed] New wheel dilema - 130mm or 135mm

I've been pondering over this for weeks and now need to decide. I need some new wheels for commuting on, fancy Mavic open pro rims, and either pro 2 or pro 3 hubs. I have a Salsa Casseroll which can spring to 135mm, but I imagine I'll be replacing it before too long, maybe for a new Kaffenback, or possibly a Van Nichols Amazon (if i save up for about a year).

If I go for 135mm I'll immediately rule out an alu or carbon framed road bike. If I go 130m, no option for disc brakes. The riding is the same 40 miles each day on mostly flat, mostly good roads, so discs would be overkill. But they'd just give a bit more versatility.

What would you do? I can't decide ๐Ÿ™

At the risk of kicking this can of worms around all over again, I do 30 miles a day and both of my road commuters use road BB7's discs. Not going back to caliper brakes - discs make a lot of sense for dedicated commuter bike where dependability is the key.

One bike uses and old alu Airbourne Carpe Diem, spaced at 132.5mm, so it can stretch to 135mm or compress to 130mm. Been running 135mm disc hubs for years and years and has never been a problem for frame integrity, so don't rule alu out.

If you went Hope for the hubs, could you change the axle from 130 to 135mm as you change frame?

discs aren't overkill at all. they are hassle free, and work in all the weathers and no grinding the rims away in the grime.

What would I do? Use it as an excuse to buy a new bike immediately.

Ha! The flock of five in my living room is just about tolerated, one more might cause trouble.

I thought 'overkill' because normal calipers are adequate, cheaper and lighter. Also, there's many more different frames around for road size rather than 135mm.

I'll look into the short axle idea, indeed I could have something made if it's not available, but it'd mean changing the bearings each time too, so not that straightforward.

I have an Amazon (132.5mm spacing) and bought it because it has disc mounts.

you want to replace your Salsa Casseroll with a Kafenback? i'd really not bother fella, the salsa is a much nicer frame and ride for sure.

get some good caliper brakes, Tiagra or higher and have them set up well, you really don't need anything more than this for the road.

if its just looking tired and you do want a new bike, why not get the frame resprayed?

just my two pence worth.
