Ride most of the time in the peaks and was thinking about getting the High Roller 2.35's front and rear....would the 2.5's be a bit big for my frame ??
Have Mountain King Protection 2.4's at the moment I know alot of people dont like them but they have been good for me just get flats from time to time
Cheers
Andy
2.35 or 2.5 what...?
EDIT: ooh sneaky edit?
Someone suggested maxxis minions after he had used the 2.2 MK Protections versions and said they were great but not sure it's an all round tyre compared with something like the 2.2 MK Protections?
jimmy , sorry just read it back and found it would be a good idea to pop in the word high roller
ooops,,
Just that the 2.5's feel very heavy and i need all the help i can get going up hill
How would we know if the 2.5 HRs will be too big for your frame if we dont know what your frame is?
I have a 60a 2.35 HR on the front for plenty of grip and a 60a 2.35 Larson TT on the back to save weight and reduce rolling resistance and so far it has been a good combination will quite a lot less drag but has still been quite grippy. FWIW I ride general trails mixed in with a spot of DH. There is plenty of room on my frame (Spech Pitch) and forks (Pikes) for mud so no worries there.
there is a clue in the thread title....
2.5 would be a push in the back of my five. 2.35's are just about right.
Yep just seen that. Stupid me.
I tend to forget the title once I've started reading.
Sorry (again) its a Orange Five 2009 with Talas 32's that I think is rather nice .
I've got the same bike (with the float 32's) and I've put Minion 2.35's on it after a nightmare with the MK 2.2's it came with. I tried a HR 2.35 on the back; great grip but a bit draggy for me. Minions are a great tire (came out as top all-rounder in a group test i read last week).
2.35 Nev/BG works a treat on the Five. Not fab in the slop but better than a King and they work well on wet rocks and roots.
I have to say my MK 2.2 Protections wear out quickly but do grip well and not bad in teh mud actually but not used and Minions - I think they will be the next pruchase 😉
By all accounts the standard Conti MKs that come with the 5 are pretty poor. The Protection versions are better due to the thicker sidewalls and black chilli compound rubber.
I've been running MK Pros 2.4s on my 5 for over a year in the Peaks and find them to be a great tyre. Reasonable grip, fast rolling and a sturdy tyre. I do run high psi though.
As for the mud then their grip is limited but they do seem to have a predictable slide. Due to the tread pattern they also clear mud quite effectively.
I am in the market for trying some new rubber and I'm torn between Kenda BG/Nevegal 2.35 combo or Maxxis HR/Larsen TT 2.35 combo.
Swampthing front, Larsen 2.35 (60a) rear. Also on my Five.
Ps. I'm a nervous rider and I initially thought a Larsen on the rear would be dangerous. Its not- I also have Mountain Kings and they are allover the place compared.
If you do get a Larsen- dont get a Exception- the rocks will have em
i have been running 2.1 kevlar bead HR for 12 months on my sirius and they were just a bit too jittery on corners or slippy up rocks/roots. i put a 2.35 minion on the back last week and i cant stop wanting to go faster on the same trails (ladybower/pennines) and dont 'seem' to be any slower on the flat. great tyre combo - just me holding the bike back now!
Ive used 2.5minions in the alps on my 5 they fit fine.
If i was you i'd put on 2.35 high rollers.
60a compound for the rear and 42a for the front.
I've got a 2.35/2.1 Ignitor combo on my Helius, that's a 130mm travel front and rear and they work very well indeed 😀
just put a GEAX Mountain on the back of my five after recomend from LBS who ride the surrey hills a lot, only had a couple of runs but so far really pleased with it on the back. still got the MK on the front and its ok.
Thats good to know hora about the Larsens. I think I'm sold. Larsen TT (60a) 2.35 on the rear and High Roller 2.35 on the front.
Not sure which one though. The 60a folding/kevlar is like rocking horse poo. There is the cheaper heavier ST 42a wire bead. Is there a great deal of difference??
I've only briefly used Larsens, but they were horrible... If you're short of grip at a slightly damp glentress, something's wrong tbh. If you want something like that, take a look at the kenda small block 8s, they're the same idea except that they actually work.
King o' Biccies Shouldnt be as the front is unloaded on climbs/most of the time? If you had a 42a on the rear you would really feel it?
Northwind- I said the same about Mountain Kings! I wouldnt put a Larsen on the front though- rear for rolling resistance.
If Maxxis made folding Kevlar Swampthings though- I dont think I'd use any other tyre.
"If i was you i'd put on 2.35 high rollers.
60a compound for the rear and 42a for the front"
....................................................
Thats what I think I am going to go for ..
One last thing, are they proper thight to get on and off the rim ?? just that when a mate fitted some 2.5 high rollers he said they were a pain to fit....my MK's just about fall on and off the rim
Cheers for the help boys n girls !!
Hang on. I've got a Maxxpro 60a HR 2.35 and a Supertacky 2.35 one as well.
Ive also got:
One Maxxis Advantage 2.35 60a folding
Two supersonic 2.2 Mountain Kings
One wornish 2.4 mountain king
One good 2.4 mountain king (both protection)
Maxxis Bling Bling 2.35 60a(?)
Loads more as well.
If anyone is localish your more than welcome to borrow one or two for a ride.
{I'm in Hebden tomorrow and Cut Gate sunday). could leave a tyre(s) under my car.
From memory I didnt get on with the high rollers- found them very 'tall'. NWest mtb bike shop used to cut down the knobs for a fee as apperently when HR's are half-worn they come into their own?
