New shock for a 26er

Hi all,ย

I'm in the middle of servicing my 2014 Specialized Stumpjumper FSR Comp ready for drier weather and I sent the rear shock away last week to be serviced.ย  Unfortunately, a fundamental part of the shock has failed and due to its age, replacement parts aren't available.ย  Consequently, I need a new shock.

I've never had to buy suspension before and I've got no idea where to start 😭 .ย  The old shock was a 150mm Fox Float CTD (part no: CJS6).ย  I would really appreciate some suggestions of what I could replace it with and what I need to consider to ensure the new one is compatible.ย ย

Many thanks.

You need the shock stroke and eye to eye measurements.ย  Likely there will be a number around second hand that will fit

Thanks.

Possibly, a silly question but are brand new shocks compatible with 26" frames assuming the eye to eye and stroke are the same?ย  I don't want to take the risk of buying second-hand, getting it serviced, only to find something is broken...

It looks like you need a 195x46 shock. Not a very common size now it seems.

Does your Specialized have a yoke connected to the shock?

Wheel size is irrelevant.ย  It's the shock size as mentioned above, plus the mounting type (for example you won't want a 'trunnion mount'). If in doubt speak to someone like TF Tuned who will be happy to guide you, they will also happily service a used shock you have bought and tune it to your frame / riding style (with an older model sized shock this may be your best bet).

Quick google suggests this is the current shock:

REAR SHOCK - Custom FOX Float CTD Evolution w/ AUTOSAG, Climb, Trail, Descend settings and reb adj., 195x46mm

So you'll need a 195x46mm sized shock, I assume you can reuse mounting hardware fitted to your current shock.

Yes there was a yoke on the old shock.

I have a 200*50 gathering dust that might fit.ย  Fox Float R.ย ย

Yours for postage if I can figure out a courier that won't embargo it during postage.ย  It might even be possible for whoever has your shock to cannibalise it for parts.ย  It's probably about the right era iirc and used very lightly as I sold the frame it was for (a specialized ) for parts 10 years or more ago.ย  It replaced a 195*46 in a 2003 Enduro.ย ย

Where did you send it to?

Can you not ask them to write down the dimensions for you so you know what you're looking for?

Edi: forgot to type my standard response. "Time to buy a new bike".

J-Tech.ย  Its in bits and not much point in re-assembling.ย  ย

No but they could tell you exactly what you need to go shopping for so we don't have to guess.

All you need is the eye to eye in mm and the stroke. There might even be a serial number which corresponds to a SKU.

It'll save you from potentially ordering the wrong thing. If it is 195mm good luck finding one.

I'm pretty certain it is 195mm based on what others have said and my own research.ย  I'm going to need all the luck I guess.

With it having the bolt-on yoke at the rear end of the shock, finding a direct replacement will be really difficult.

IIRC (I owned a 2014 Enduro 29 with the same shock setup), you can get an adaptor that does away with the yoke and opens up 'normal' shock types and sizes:

https://www.tftuned.com/sj01-stumpjumper-2010-2015/p3272?srsltid=AfmBOoqEuhhftrXYFbIU_I0wrKz4SutX0hY6l_mara8J_of3hoCLtJou

(Google throws up much cheaper adaptors from Aliexpress if you feel lucky...)

Which then means you can use either a 190x45 (rear travel is reduced by 2-5 mm) or a 7.5"x2.0" older imperial-sized shock (approx 5mm more travel).

Ahhh very clever, thanks.

https://www.merlincycles.com/fox-float-dps-3pos-adjust-performance-rear-shock-190-336471.html?utm_campaign=googlebase-GB&utm_source=googlebase&utm_medium=shopping&utm_term=Rear+Shocks&ucpo=231347 this would be a good budget option if you went with the yoke adapter

This would be a decent budget option if you went for the yoke adapter and 190x45 is sufficientย
