Hi all,

So I need a new rear wheel for my Mango Point AR, Its a right minefield out there so would appreciate some recommendations? I don't know whether I should spend the dosh on some good wheels or el cheapo ones - I'm not into racing but tend to do 30-50 mile rides.

I weigh 85kg (with the bike 97kg ish in total) so I think that rules out most Hunt wheels as I want them now and not in August when I could get some Superdura's

I've been looking at these options - needs 6 bolt disc and 135mm QR:

any opinions much appreciated 🙂

I think the weight limit for Hunts applies to rider only - im 85kg and have put a lot of miles on my Hunt gravel wheels without them exploding, so you'd probably be fine on the 4 seasons if they have stock. I've always found them great to deal with so you could always drop them a line to check before ordering.

What size tyres are you looking to run?

That makes no sense.

I'm 91 kg and had hunt wheels on road and MTB - all good so far. Have been running the race aero on road bike and the 4 seasons on commuter for over a year now, and done a lot of miles. For the 4 seasons it says "115kgs is the upper recommended rider weight limit for these wheels" - so you should be ok.

I've got a set of the Hope ones and they've been rock solid over a couple of years on everything from gravel to all day road rides. Setting them up tubeless with some specialized 2 bliss Roubaix tyres was pretty easy too if that's a concern.

Cero's not something id considered although I can't see a weight limit and only 24 spokes makes me nervous about them.

I've got some 32mm Continental contact's but I have thought about investing in 28's as I'm only doing road duties.

The Hunt 4 seasons look ok but only 24 spokes again so I'm just not sure if I'm too close and its frustrating that I can't get hold of any until July at the earliest.

I've got a pair of the Prime RR38 wheels (rim brake admittedly). For the money I'm delighted. They're light, roll nicely and great quality for the price.

Another one here for the Hope 20five's

Have a set on my Gravel bike (im currently weighing 103kg) and they have been faultless, they have been bashed off rocks, hit jumps and drops (i like to ride blue trails on the gravel bike sometimes)

Spares are easily available from Hope and they use j bend spokes so replacements are much easier to find in a local shop should you ever need one

So is the Hope RS4/20five rim combo more suited to gravel duties?

I like the idea of the prime carbon wheels, but i'm not sure what long term durability is like

4 seasons are 28 spoke rear, so bit stronger rear wheel. But lots of other options out there. Actually, just realised I’ve got the 4 season gravel disc on the commuter, which are 28/28 and 135mm. Same rider weight limit though.

I used Hunt Aero on gravel duty for a few years. I’m only 70kgs but this was bike packing setup so 10kg bike plus prob another 10kgs of bags and water.
Done the SDW and Ridgeway off road as well as touring on road with same setup.
Off road it’s fair to say they took some fairly punishing rides in their stride.

I'm 100kgs, well a bit less now, but have been using a set of 24 spoke prime wheels on a PX London road for a couple of years without problem. Put a good few thousand miles on them. I've given them to my son now, great wheels for the price.

Ok so good feedback on all the wheels apart from the superstars - I wish the Hunts weren't such a long wait for pre-orders.

@ads678 and @beaker - have you had any issues with tyre mounting and any problems with the nipples corroding due to being alloy rather than brass? I would be using these year round so I need something durable 🙂

So is the Hope RS4/20five rim combo more suited to gravel duties?

The twentyfive rim is a gravel/road rim

Hub wise you can opt for the 24 spoke rs4 disc centre lock hub (road hub) which brings the wheels in at 1670 grams

Or opt for the Pro4 hub which is for more off road, this takes the wheels upto 1825 grams

Slight hijack - if anyone is after some 32h Hope 20five wheels I have some I’m not using. Purple Pro4 hubs 6 bolt. Set up 100x12f and 142x12 rear at mo but pretty sure I have 135mm end caps also. Excellent condition as hardly used.

My wheels are only a couple of months old, they'll be for summer use only so not sure about corrosion. I had no issues with mounting Conti GP4000s tyres, I was worried about tyres as the reviews seemed a bit 50/50 on fitting. I was able to fit them by hand would be able to do so at the side of the road.

I'll only be using these on the road so maybe the 20five is overkill with weight considered too (I've got an Orange 4 for offroad)

Thanks @beaker - I am a fair weather rider but will still be using these wheels through winter so be interesting to hear of any other comments from anyone using Prime wheel's through winter vs the Hunt's which are pretty bombproof from what i've read so far.

I've run Cero and Prime before, both have been solid wheelsets without issue.
Currently running 2 sets of Cero ARD23, one set up with gravel tyres and the other 28 Conti's for the road. I'm no lightweight and both sets have held up fine, no spoke loosening, stayed true etc. They are well built, no noise, pinging etc.

Have a look at Strada's new all season disc road wheels, they also do a "Big Fella" version.

Custom specced Miche hubs and DT rims and very well built.

Can only comment on Strada - been using them since they started and had multiple builds, which have all been excellent (got a build on order at the moment).

Never once had to touch them, even though Darren offers a lifetime truing promise.

Give them a call.

Another option, which're likely in the 1600g range https://www.justridingalong.com/product/map-road-disk-wheels/#front-rear-or-pair-of-wheels

JRA use (last I was aware) Bitex hubs which are pretty decent and fairly light for the price.

The Strada wheels will likely be fairly heavy, Miche hubs usually are. Probably a solid option though.

+1 for Prime and +1 for Hunt. I've had multiple sets of both, rim and disc versions. Might be wrong but I would guess that most wheels that aren't cheapo sub £100 wheels will use alu nipples unless they're handbuilt.

Had some Hunt Race Aero rim wheels (now on my son's bike for club runs) and thought they were excellent wheels - decent value and very light. Bearings don't last so long though...

Considered picking up some used wheels? Good way to make your money go further, especially if you buy wisely. Plenty of decent deals out there and the worst you're likely to find on disc wheels is worn out bearings which are cheap and easy to sort, and a great price negotiating point 🙂 Wouldn't get too bogged down on 6-bolt vs centerlock - if you find the right wheels, a set of rotors won't set you back so much and centerlock are definitely less faff!

Ive been considering the Hunt Aero Wide Disc for £479 or these:
https://www.ryanbuildswheels.co.uk/product/aero-bomber-disk/
Which are a bit spendier and ~100g heavier but local to me and use Hope Hubs. I met Ryan at Bespoked and the AL33 rims look great.

@neila I’ve had 6 pairs of wheels through Ryan I think. Maybe more. Cannot speak high enough of his work. Very knowledgeable and a perfectionist at wheel building. I had a pair of the AL33 rims, laced 24/24 CX ray spokes to Bitex bx106 hubs (they were the blue hub pair at Bespoked) and they were ca.1500g.
He has built race wheels, touring wheels and just riding about wheels for me.

#shedbrewed Well that's good to hear, I wasn't able to find many reviews online. I will probably give Ryan a call then and see what he suggests. They're going to be for my winter all rounder once it gets a Di2 upgrade.

I'd just like to throw another option into the mix...

https://www.tritoncycles.co.uk/components-c9/wheels-c126/affinity-comp-tlr-road-disc-wheel-p11365

Have been fine for multi-day tours - I'm 90kg, and had panniers and a frame bag fitted.

Managed to pinch flat, whilst joining down a fire road in the Savernake forest, so the rims can take a bit of bashing. Also handled the canal footpath from Devices to Bradford on Avon, the next day.

They've got over 3000 miles on them and are still running fine.

And, to top it all, they're tubeless ready (proper rim strips supplied with them - none of this bodge it with sticky tape business) and can be set up for various axle types, with the appropriate adapters.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I'm still toying with the idea of trying some new kids on the block Scribes or the Prime carbon 38's as the deep section wheels just look good! Cero's look good too but not enough reviews and what i've read seem flexy. Also need the flexibility to change axles in future if i get a better bike.

Is there much benefit in carbon vs alloy wheels for the average mtb'er turned roadie?
