I have the 32V shimano middle and 44t shimano outer standard rings.
just need to replace the granny ring.
Does anyone know if I can just fit the blackspire 22t ring with these, obviously there are no ramp pins on the granny ring, So I guess its just a case of spacing.

Don't know mate, but am in the same position. I was looking to fit a granny to my XTR and tried 3 or 4 that I have lying around - probably all old shimano XT. None of them worked on the bike, all too narrowly spaced for the chain.

Aside - I noticed when I had the xtr chainset off that it had cartridge bearings - didn't realise that. I guess you can replace them when it gets wobbly.

the external bottom bracket is just a holder for a bearing, dont think your supposed to pull that plastic cap off though 🙂

Garry, do you still have the original shimano granny ring ??
does it have spacers at all, just that i tried some other shimano rings and as you say they are spaced to close to the middle ring.

No, I bust it ages ago when the chainset was new.

I don't use the granny much so am happy running a double, but there's a couple of tough climbs hereabouts I want to have a crack at and will need the small ring.

I don't think you can get hold of the shimano 22T ring anymore so its either Blackspire or Middleburn...

I have a Middleburn granny, (used once) & middle (unused) for the 960XTR if you are interested. Mail me if you want pics etc.

Full Middleburn now, but initially was a Shimano inner/Middleburn middle and Shimano outer - and then also Middleburn outer with the inner last to go.

Make sure you go for hardpoint (on all) and 'slick-shift' on the two bigger ones.

I reckon that the Shimano middle lasted a couple of hundred miles, whereas the Middle middle has done a couple of thousand miles.
