I've put a new chain (SRAM PC-971) and a new Cassette (SRAM PC-970) on one of my bikes
Mech is XT shadow only a few months old and looks to me to be set up ok
Cassette is tightened up but not over torqued

but the chain feels like it keeps on skipping round like a new chain on an old cassette when ever try to get out of the saddle/pedal up hill etc
I don't think it's trying to pick up the next cog

Any ideas? What have I missed???

Could be a stiff link in the chain. Or maybe the freewheel - skipping freewheel feels very much like chain slip.

tiz either a stiff link or the fact you're still using your old chainrings

I had exactly the same issue until I replaced my chainrings as well.

Some new chains need lube. The waxy coating is a rust protection, and is sticky.

Yeah, it's your middle chainring.

Had to replace two myself recently after leaving chains too long.

I've now bought a chain stretch measuring thingy.

I'll give the chain a lube, try that as I've not done it yet

If not I'll change the middle ring

I think it's doing it in the top ring too, which is a middleburn hardcoat which I don't use massivly so would be supprised if thats knackered too
I'll report back in an hour or so

cheers

Mine did something similar to this. Was the lockring working loose on the Hope ProII hub, causing the last few XT sprockets to move.

Check your new chain doesn't have a twisted inner link. I've seen a few that have, and it ends up with the chain jumping around and sometimes jamming between middle and big ring.

mine does this in third.

new chain cassette and chainrings. all other cogs fine but on third its the cranked shifting teeth that seem to lift the chain up.

i dont know what i can do to fix it.

Have you looked at your jockey wheels? If there like fighting stars them that could be the problem!

i`ve yet to find something a bike shop could do that i couldnt.

its odd because its the up shift side that catches. (next to 2nd gear) but in second where the chainline is worse and you would expect the problem to be worse) it doesnt happen.

jockey wheels appear fine.

Front rings are the culprits!
I cleaned and lube’d the chain + changed the middle ring
For a cheapy new one I had lying around in the garage and all is well

New Middleburn Middle and Outers rings ordered from CRC
It'll be sorted and ridable for the weekend 8)

bonza! Something I've always meant to do is have three chains & use them in rotation to delay wear on the cassette & rings.
