[Closed] New brakes for an old bike

My 2011 Scott Genius has sat neglected at the back of the garage for the last couple of years. A once-over this morning reveals it to be in good working order, other than the brakes. They were never brilliant, and now need replacing.

Any recommendations?

With it being an older bike, anything I need to consider fit / compatibility wise?

It’s this model:

Thanks!

Just find what you can really. I can’t tell from the spec but you may have is mounts rather than post mount but you can get adapters if needed.

Anything like Sram levels / guides or Shimano deore etc will probably be fine. Maguras are ok but the lower models have long levers that are sometimes composite not metal. Clarks M4 if you find any aren’t too bad - I fitted some to
My nephews bike and they were so cheap for 4 pots that came with rotors and some adapters.

Edit - you’ll find some brakes somewhere as long as you’re aren’t too picky on which ones. I found if you spend less than £135 from Europe there isn’t any additional duty - Mantel prices are as they list on their website.

Looks like Lordgun bicycles have a pair of levels for not too much money. Some deore 2 pots around in the UK but you might need to buy the rear from one place and front from another due to stock levels.

2011 isn't really "old" yet.

It would be Cheaper to bleed them and fit fresh pads, but they're Elixirs which IIRC were known for being a bugger to get a good bleed on...

Just about any current brake should fit, post mount Front and rear correct?

Thanks all.

Agreed that 2011 isn’t old as such, it just seems ancient when compared to all the new ‘standards’ that have been introduced since (it doesn’t even have a clutch mech, not that I’ve ever used one to be able to draw a comparison).

I’ll try to bleed them tomorrow though they were tricky when new, so not all that confident.

There seems to be stock of Deore m6000 here and there. I’ll look at them if the bleed doesn’t work out.

I'm not sure from your post if you are up to date with the latest bits.

Clutch mech is a nice to have, 1x and a narrow wide chainring are ace (with a wide range cassette).

And a dropper.

Meant my 2011 bike was grand until I got the itch to replace with a new bike 2 years ago.

Have a dropper, and think I’m up to date with most of that which has been introduced in recent years, just not used them. The arrival of children in the last 5 years has meant far more time on the road bike than the mountain bike.

Can see the sense in 1x (the Genius has 30 gears!) and would like to try a 27.5, just can’t justify a new mountain bike with how little I use it and, to be honest, the Genius has always felt like all the bike I need.

What are the original brakes? IME, fitting a bigger rotor on the front, metallic pads, and making sure they are properly bled makes a huge difference. If it's been sitting for years, cleaning the rotors with alcohol and fitting new pads, then bedding them in properly makes a big difference too.
