Reeksy Jr1 has outgrown his XS so i'm on the lookout for a new medium sized bike that will last him a few years.
Budget ain't much, but i'd like to get a bike with a dropper. Not sure whether to go new HT or 2nd hand FS. He of course would love FS (but will be happy with anything), but i'm concerned it will be heavy. We ride tech xc and mild gnar, he's getting pretty quick but there's no massive mountains round here and I don't ride FS.
What seems available locally in budget is:
New Scout Race 290 (would buy a dropper for it) 10 speed but 46tooth rear, 140mm Rockshox Silver (~14kg)
New Trek Roscoe 7 same price as the Nuke + dropper, same fork, but 12 speed shimano (~14kg)
Second hand 2021 Norco Fluid FS2 same fork but 130mm, 12 speed shimano and slightly cheaper (plus potential to knock down). (~15.5kg)
Tossing up new bike with warranty vs 2nd hand... weight...
Am i missing anything here?
I just got my 11yr old (twins) XS 650" wheeled FS Giants, 2nd hand. They are 120mm travel XC bikes, very light and they are running 26" wheels in them right now. Frames were cheap and bits came from all sorts of places including 2nd hand wheels.. I reckon they're lighter than new bikes of twice the price.
Worked out about £5-600 each.
If you want light and fullsuss then howabout my missus's Stumpy 26" Epic.
Lots of XO and carbon fibre frame.
Edit. Ah, size small though.
Yeah. He’s 5ft5 and growing at a disturbing rate so definitely onto a medium. And shopping to Oz a bit expensive!
Looked at a barely ridden Norco tonight which seemed ok. 1x12 but basic Rockshox suspension.
