Brakes do nothing at all stopping wise. New levers, new cables, sanded rims.
Any ideas of how to make them function or how to replace for better? No vbrake posts 😢
Pad type? Centre pull ( well old) or side pull? Steel or alloy rims?

What exactly is the problem? When you pull the lever, is the action smooth, or tight? Is there sufficient force onto the rim?
Could be the through-bolt is too tight, or your pads maybe shot (Assuming everything's aligned and fitted correctly)
Not too much to really go wrong with those....
Are the pads making full contact with the rims or are they only touching along an edge? Are the levers the right pull ratio? Its different for v brakes and u calipers
Yep, those will be shit. There's just not enough metal to make them stiff.
Best advice would probably be to get some non-series shimano long-drop calliper brakes if they're the right depth , but might require slightly smaller/slicker tyres. Dia compe make bmx brakes which might offer some improvement too.
Also, swisstop pads. Or other expensive pads, they're a world away from the midrange fibrax, Clarke etc.
Not sure if I've read your post correctly but you can fit Vs on canti brake posts and buy cable stops that wrap around the frame tube if you need them.

They were shit when new once we shifted to alloy rims.
Rubber pads go along way.
The one about our bsas are pretty good with the old felt pads on Chrome rims.

I built up an unstealable bike for one of my sons when he went to Uni.
Old Saracen road frame which had Weinmanns fitted. Even on a dry day,they were deadly,so swapped the pads for longer V-brake pads,fitted straight bars and a set of Deore levers.
All worked well. Still wouldn't fancy using them offroad.

At a guess, you've got them working good as new already. Don't waste your time trying to make them any better than that.
This photo appears to show steel rims (hard to tell from the photos though). Those aren't steel rim pads. Swiss stop won't be of any help here if it is a steel rim (unless they do a steel rim pad).

Still won't be great but should work better than that setup.

Right pads and when fitting them put a small spacer (like credit card) between the pad and rim at the back then pull the brakes on tight when you tighten the bolts. The toe-in improves the grip.
