Been looking at a new rear mudguard for my commute mtb. Why are they all so ugly and gash looking?
Loads of mixed reviews on durability, and they all seem to point skyward and look cheap and nasty.
I have an old crud rear guard (the one with the 2 support struts) which is ace, except it's on loan from a friend and I recently kinked it.
So I need a new one. - Recommendations please!?
I recommend you treat your friends' kit better ๐
Nah, he likes to be treated rough. ๐
Get some full length SKS/Bluemels 'guards on there - if you run them close to the tyres they look fine and they're far better at keeping you clear of road spray than crud-catchers etc.
I recomend you treat my kit better too ๐
First generation race-guard. anyone got any pics of one?
what's that TJ?
Sorry bit got missed of
Its a decathlon mudguard but it is not on the site now
I've got that decathlon one. It's useful but not quite long enough so you still get the odd smattering. Still better than anything else I've tried.
that's pretty neat. I gets my mudguard-fetishists seal of approval ๐
There was a company in california making similar ones out of carbon fibre some 10 years ago - basically a v-brake booster with a bit added on. I never found an importer though ๐
If its for commuting why not full length mudguards?

TJ - better than that, it's a genesis io so has the bolt on mounts - which look very useful.
Waswaswas - I commute off road. full length guards are a no go.
IR- sorry! spank me next time you see me :-p

you'll just have to put up with using ugly 'guards or getting a muddy bum then ๐
They look nasty because they are miles away from the wheel and point skyward ruining the lines of the bike.
I've managed to mount a cycraguard to the fram below the QR clamp so it is permanently in position and not altered by moving the saddle. I can mount it close to the wheel for best appearance and effect.
Zefal seem to do a new equivalent of that Decathlon one that can even be fitted to front sus forks:-

I'd be worried about a guard/downtube interface at full compression with that but looks neat for a rear guard solution.
