Continental Cross Country 1.5 is what you need.

Conti edges 1.9 used in the mudbath at SITS last year - so long as you could keep going fast enough that they self cleared they were great - drop below a critical speed and they clogged. Plenty of grip tho. I managed to ride more than many folk but I did envy the few folk on the 1.5s

Conti 1.5's take some beating, but they need to be pumped up pretty hard to avoid pinch flats (I used to use 55-65psi) which can make handling fun on non muddy bits.

Cross Countries are terrible tyres, awful! They're narrow yes, but the tread's useless.

Much much much better off with 1.5" Schwalbe Black Shark Muds, I believe they may have stopped making them, but they absolutely awesome in SITS/MM mud, the only thing to have.

Run really nicely ghetto tubeless too!

Schwalbe Black Shark Muds 1.5 - made Mayhem and SITS rideable last year. Not tried the others, but I'm sure they also work splendidly! I got mine after a recommend from a mate, and only ever use them at these sort of events as I live where there is never much mud (bliss)!

conti xc on the rear, schwalbe black shark on the front is the nuts. but if \sits is anything like last year, then it won't matter what tyres you got.
better off with a pair of wellies

Nah, Dusk 'til Dawn's not sticky enough for Black Shark's! Mud Xs at most!

I thought for sits last year the conclusion we came to was TI unicycle so its light to carry and football boots for traction in the mud ๐Ÿ™‚

I use Continental Edges. They are good when it's really wet, but I find them a bit hard to judge on drier sections - they tend to grip & then all of a sudden slide.
I only use them if I know it's gonna be grim all the way round.

If SITS is like last year then anything 1.5 as they are the only things that will keep turning!

I used conti xcs as they were what i already owned and they were ok for grip. Shame my feet ended up the size of an elephants from all the mud that stuck to them. Was entertaining seeing all those in skate shoes/5tens/DXs etc trying to walk up some of the slopes too - studs all the way.

Yet another vote for Maxxis Medusa in the 1.8" eXCeption version.

Other skinny mud tyres not mentioned above, though I don't know how good they are:

Geax Barro Mud 1.7"
Vredestein Bull Lock 1.8"
Geax Gato 1.9"

Bonty Mud X are fantastic all round tyres mud, hard trails, everything.
Trailrakers are very slightly better in mud but pretty sketchy on anything else

I've bought a pair of Geax Barro Mud 1.7s for this weekend's mud fest.

I'm a SITS virgin but had the character building (ha!) night lap of hell at Mountain Mayhem last year.

Gone for some Medusa 1.8 this year. Even the 2.1 Black Sharks clogged last year - good on the first lap though.

Both are too thick for the proper clag you get at SITS/Mayhem!

Trail Rakers don't have much of a place IMO, if it's sticky mud then you need something narrower, if it's not then the Mud-X is a far superior tyre.

hmm, I don't rate the mudx as a rear driver tyre, so use one on the front and a trailraker on the back... (2.1 TR on the rear is still not as wide as the 2.0 mud-x on the front)

hmmm not my experience living in Bristol, home of claggy mud ๐Ÿ™‚ and several muddy MMs.

maybe I'm just a bit of a legend at riding in the mud ๐Ÿ™‚ I suppose it'd explain why my results at the Bristol 12 this year were better than I expected.

Continental Cross Country 1.5 or Schwalbe Black Shark Muds 1.5

Both very good but you need to expect to slid a lot!

Best suprising all round tyre that clears mud well... Schwalbe Smart sams.. fast rolling, clears mud, clay, One of the best all round tyres I've used in the last 10 years, a lot like the old IRC mythos tyres.. you forget they are there. It doesn't look like it should, but it does. The other would be the Panracer muds 1.8's a mud tyre that rolls well like an all rounder... both very stable in harsh conditions.

Trailraker 1.95" front, Black Shark mud 1.5" rear.
Kept me riding through SITS and Mayhem last year.

The 2.1" version of the trailraker is too wide though.
Conti XC's are narrow, but no where near as much bite as the black shark muds.

Bonty mud x 1.8, but for flipsake don't keep em on too long if it starts to dry out, especially on the rear, they're pretty draggy due to those lovely soft well spaced knobbles.
I've got some conti cross country's 1.5, which look like they will roll faster, and also some 1.5 mud sharks, which look grippier, but slower.
(yeah sounds like i robbed a tyre shop don't it...... it's a long story.... one that mrsdrillski better not hear!)
Thinking about mixing and matching a bit depending on the conditions, epsecially if they change much as the event goes on ( last 2 mayhems anyone?)

used my 2.1 mudx on front and 1.8 on rear at southern xc alton yesterday.
good in the slop and roots but once the mud starts to dry and go claggy its sooo draggy as drillski says, combined with the killer climbs was a tough day.
grip was good and cleared on the in between sections but on the messy off camber sections before clearing they would go a bit out of control and slide which any tire would
mud shark might be better in that type though, happy with reliable tubeless ready mudx though
