very nice!!!i would like to get a 5 one day, when i have some funds!!!how does it ride?
Rides very nicely indeed. Compared to my other FS bike, I find the suspension a bit active for pedally sections, but with the Propedal flicked to no.1, it's got exactly the right suspension action & is almost the same as my 'linkage' FS.
It's a 'jointly owned' bike with my wife, er...so I found out this weekend ๐ I was looking for a more stable and 'error forgiving' bike than our current XC biased FS's, but one that still has a fun feel to it. IMO, it fits the bill perfectly.
FWIW, I'm lucky(er..?!) enough to also own a Pace RC405, which is awesome, but it feels a bit more suited to trail centre/fast XC stuff than real rocky natural terrain - TBH though, I think this is probably down to my technique (lack of!) - but IMO the Five feels miles more capable on rough descents.
(mr MC posting)
used to vehemently dislike Oranges for their industrial, shipyard aesthetics (probably cos the first one I saw was a battleship-grey Patriot), but the more I see Fives and Alpines on here the more I like em. Only ever heard effusive praise on their ride quality and *choke* thats a really nice looking bike.
Whats the boost valve? Just ordered mine and its on a 2-3week lead time!
Ordered an SE with 36's, V2's, hope BB and Maxle rear.
Mr MC, I know what you mean about the challenging aesthetics, especially the old Patriots. I think the way they've reduced the size of the box sections and fluted the down tube helps with the overall look. But as you say, I think colour choice def. comes into play - perhaps more so on these type of 'boxy' type frames. (my colour choice was influenced by stuff I'd seen on this forum) BTW, the paint finish itself is one of the best quality I've seen on a 'normal' production bike - different league to the paintjob on my Pace.
Oh, the boost valve thing is s'posed to smooth out the on/off transition in damping when in the propedal settings, so (in theory) you don't notice when the propedal is working (if that meakes sense). I think it's also supposed to give the shock a better (more linear?) feel on big hits - over the weekend, I've been regularly pushing the O ring to the end of the shock, but haven't noticed any hint of the shock ramping up. TBH, it surprised me when I saw how much travel I'd been using, so I double checked the sag, & it was dead on for my weight. I think the new damping just gives it a really 'bottomless' feel.

I got my frame about 6 weeks ago, so I reckon you should get a 2010 'boost valved' shock. Nice spec BTW, it'll monster anything with 36's on ๐
Er...I'll stop enthusing now ๐
