Finally got to meet up with Funkrodent off of here and bought his 5 spot from him.

Very pleased however I definitely need to change the stem for something shorter(see the pics).

As it came........

Then washed and new saddle fitted...

Jobs to do include...

New bottom bracket
new gear cables
shorter stem
pedals.

I also need to do a full stirp of the rear end as there is quite a bit of stiction even with no pressure in the rear shock, Im guessing the links need a clean and grease?

Is there instructions anywhere on how to strip and clean the bushes etc?

What do you think then ? I got it for a very reasonable £1275 which I dont think is bad for the spec(reve, hope wheels and full 10 speed deore)

I got a 2nd hand frame and the back end was the same{stiction}, got rid of it in the end I just never got on with it but couldn't put my finger on why

The bushings in dw 5 spot do have more stiction than bearings and can take forever to break in. Obviously check their all clean, check the torqs, the one for the main piviot has been lessened now by turner so check on their web site or contact them. You can tune the bushings with emery cloth, you should be able find details on the turner forum of mtb.com or failing that turner themselves will tell you how to do it if you ask. You can also buy allegedly slicker bushing made by push from tf tuned.

If you undo the shock bolts you are supposed to be able to depress the rear with one hand on the saddle.

My Flux has always had more stiction than that but rides nice and plush. Bearing action under load is the key thing.

Use a large punch or rounded end of a large hex key and a mallet to nock out the pivots if they are tight.

You can also put those enduro needle bearings in the shock mounts to improve small bump performance even more - you only really need to put one in the top shock mount as the bottom wont rotate much.

If the back end won't drop on its own with the shock out then something isn't set correctly. Main pivot bolts are known to mushroom from being torqued to highly. That can cause excessive stiction. If that's the case contact turner even if your not the first owner, there is a fair chance they will sort you out. Some times its just one pivot that's a little too tight. With the shock out go round and loosen them one at a time to see if that's the case. Honestly if its so stiff that you want to sell it something isnt set right. The bushings are never goingto be as slick as a new bearing unloaded, but its not something you should really notice in use and bushings are said to have other benifits. A custom shock and volume tune could also allow you to run lower pressures which is only going to help. Best bet is a bit of reasurch on the turner forum of mtb.com and contacting turner directly.

It drops now with the new push bushes.

These bushings will be a good upgrade if you have the cash

I have not purchased them, but good feedback here:

Just be aware that all new bushings take a good amount of time to bed in, and the difference is very noticeable once bed in from what I have read.

I find the back lower DW Link bushings to be a little tighter than the others but that has happened with 2 kits, so think it might be normal.

One thing for sure you will enjoy the frame. Been out on mine 3 times now, and the frames are spot on 🙂

As for cleaning bushings. Very easy 🙂

P.S WTF was the previous owner thinking with that stem. Can only think they were 7ft tall.

Great bike - what travel does the fork have - looks a bit lower than the usual 150 you get with those Revs - unless of course it's duel position.

No markings. Just measure the travel. Looks like 130 to me, which means they might have a spacer in to reduce travel. The 5 Spot is better suited to 150mm (at least that's what I've got mine set up with).

they might need some air in them as they are as soft as ... at the moment.

how do i check the spacer thing then ??

EDIT... Just been out and checked them and they measure 135mm.

I pulled down on the lowers and it extends quite easily without resistance so im guessing the nee some more air in the positive chamber ??

They have a + on top of the left leg and a neg air thing on the bottom of the left leg so im guessing they are dual air?

Don't get too hung up on stcktion, if there is any doubt strip the bushes give them a clean and lube.
They take a while to bed in and free up properly, probably about the same time the average set of roller bearings last in a "normal" frame!
Just ride it. It will be great! ( well once you get a 70mm stem)!!

Cheers for the help.

It feels like it has a lot more stiction than the 09 one i had but apparently the bushes etc where updated for the 2010 model.

When my new inner cables come i will strip the back end off and clean it all up and put some fresh grease on/in it!

The forks are 2012 dual air 150mm..... just not got the right air pressure in !!

btw bikes only been used for 15 rides so the bushes could still need bedding in!

My dw 5spot feels a little stiff when the shocks off but rides fine

Just checked the fork pressures..

neg was more than pos hence why i had lost a couple of cm of travel....

however now set correctly(excuse the mudguards but im riding to work tomorrow..)

looks much better now and the front feels a bit higher too.

Are you bothering getting a grease gun for the zerk's Renton?

The only reason I ask is that I've got conventional 90 degree & straight grease fittings that I screw in mine and just use a standard grease gun with flexi hose.

If you ever need any give me a shout, I'm sure I've spares lying around !

Actually mate im still trying to find out the best option as the turner gun is about 40 quid !!

what have you got and what grease do you use mate as my bushes need lubing big style i think !!

I have the proper stuff. Superlube Syncolon. Don't drop silly money on this stuff, give me a shout if you after some!

I clean the Zerks with a brush to get the crud off then remove them and screw in a standard nipple. Simples.

I could actually leave the standard nipples in I think. Maybe a better idea as you can get the plastic nipple covers ( ooer ) off eBay for pennies. No more cleaning prior to greasing!

I don't know about the 5 spot but my flux zerks are threaded so they screw out easy.
I went down this route as I already had a standard grease gun with flexi hose and there's no way I'm dropping 40 sheets on a daft grease gun mate.

Wherlabours are you bud as I was wondering if for a small donation if I could send you a syringe so you could fill it with a bit of grease so I can service my bushings.

Well just a little update.

Ive took the back end off and gave it a good greasing and it has improved thing quite a lot however I still have a couple of pivots that are massively tight, to the point where I had to use a soft face hammer to insert them into the bushes and I needed to use a long arm allen key to turn them.

Ive been reading up on the pivot mod on mtbr where you basically take some emery cloth to the pivot and try and remove some of the material to loosen them up, so Im going to give that a go sometime this week.

Ive put some air in the forks and now they read the correct travel which is nice.

I have also changed the tyres around so now I have the x king on the rear and a new mountain king on the front.

The last thing I have done is change the stem to a 70mm one, initial thoughts are that it may be to short but I need to have a play and also fit my new bars at work tomorrow.

I have a 2011 5 spot and after a good years riding i still have no hankering after a new bike which says a lot. I usually have a serious case of upgradeitis. 70mm stem is spot on. Maintenance is a breeze with the zerk fittings.

Mudguard has to go though. 🙂

Ah brilliant, looking at the size specs the small does look really short.

I've only tried a small 05 frame so I've still to try a medium.

It's going to be a present for my 30th and graduating my PGCE so I can get something special. I just can't get out of my head how much I enjoyed the Orange 5 I test rode..

Gawjuss.

I'd be tempted to try the crud catcher attached just under the seat clamp though. Dunno, just looks a bit high up on the sp.
