Having been out of the saddle for the best part of a year I now find I dont have the confidence to go back to spd's on most of my bikes. I use 5.10's on the trail bike but they are useless in the heavy muddy Suffolk clag around here. Can anyone recommend anything that might do the trick?
I always thought the Shinamo's MT/XM boot with vibram sole were a contender for this role, though their latest offering the EX9 (bloody expensive), no longer has the vibam sole. I have a set, though yesterday was my first ride in 6 months, so I have limited experience in the mud. They seemed fine, in some proper claggy clay stuff, as they are very similar to the vibram sole type grip. They have a covering over the cleat section, so can be used as 'normal' shoes, or remove it to convert them to cleats later.
Forgot to say I want laces, not that Puma Disc system that seems to be everywhere.
If you don’t want spd capability, then any hiking boot/approach shoe should work. Why does it need to be MTB specific?
5.10 make some trail cross shoes
any hiking boot/approach shoe should work
For winter riding I'm currently using a pair of Berghaus Explorer Trek hiking boots that are a size up from normal (to accommodate extra layers) and they've been great. There are often good prices for these on eBay too.
