Hi,

I'm looking for some new all mountain shoes. Looking for spd compatible with a good sole for the odd patch of hike-a-bike. I ride in the mountains north of Madrid. It's generally pretty dry and rocky but snowy in the winter. I'm OK about having cold wet feet in the winter so not looking for gore-tex.

Mavic Alpine XL looked perfect but the fit is weird. I had to go a size and a half up to get them to fit me but then they were too loose.
Shimano lasts seem to be too narrow.

My last shoes were Spiuk - they were great but I'm not keen on the new range.

Anyone got any other suggestions?

Cheers,

Dan

Giro Gauge's, got some recently and are super comfortable. Comes with a selection of insoles for various arch support.

They have Easton EA50 carbon soles for extra pimp.

Carbon soles are pretty poor for hike a bike.

Spesh rime would fit the bill.

I also find Shimano shoes too narrow to be comfortable. I really like Northwaves. They're uber-comfy and well vented. The Northwave Missions are great for when you have to do a bit of hiking too.

I know you said you didn't need Gore Tex, but These are pretty reasonably priced

What MSP said. I love my Rimes. Best bike shoes I have ever owned.

Then they can't be very good carbon soles, my bont carbon soled shoes are incredible on the bike, but just feel freaky even when walking the bike out of the garage.

Thanks a lot for all the recommendations guys! Lot's to go at here. I think I'll have a look at the Northwaves and the Specialized Rhimes.

Cheers,

Dan

Thanks gonzy, i tried the Mavics but the fit is weird. In the end I got Spec Tahoes. I looked at the Rhime and they look nice but i just couldn't bring myself to fork out 170euros on a pair of shoes.

UPDATE: The Specialized Tahoes didn't work out. Partly they are too big for me (why is it that after 36 years I still can't buy clothes and shoes that fit me?) and partly the soles are stiffened with extract of noodle. That meant I had to tighten them too much (my fault) and the cleat created a pressure point on the ball of my foot and my feet went numb.

So I went with Binners's suggestion of the Northwave shoes. (And a size smaller.) I still haven't worn them in anger yet but once I've got angry in them I will report back.

Picked up some of these for half price to commute and wear at work, without looking too weird. Loads of grip of them and fairly flexible compared to everything else I've used.

Look like a similar setup to the Tahoes.

Love my five ten maltese falcons, bit pricy but very happy with them.

I hope you get on with the Northwaves Dang. I've had a few pairs now. Another bonus is that they clean up nicely after being coated in crap, and seem to last stay together far longer than the Tahoes I've had in the past. And they're miles more comfortable if you're in them all day

+3 for the Spesh Rimes. Pricey yes, but very, very good - you get what you pay for and all that...

Those Mavics look like something from a Sunday Mirror Readers offer. The Giros are great.
