Hi all

I have recently sold my full suspension bike and want to get my hands on a trail centre ready hardtail for around or under £1000, I like alot of tech, steep, off piste enduro type riding.

I have looked at the Whyte 901 and on-one 456, both look like they would meet my needs the geometry on the Whyte looking the better for tech riding?

Anybody had experience of riding these bikes or got a better direction to look in for this sort of ride?

Thanks in advance 🙂

tech, steep, off piste enduro type riding

You`ll be wanting something long and slack then.....
Often overlooked but I love mine, Mondraker Vantage 🙂

Dear god man the 901!

+1

Or some alternatives from the same brand, the new 805/806 range has been updated with very similar geometry to the 901, and the new 629 is basically a 29er version of the 901 in terms of geometry and spec, if not colour.

I just put my Bird Zero AM back to stock geometry after an experiment in extreme lowness and slackness.

It rips. Buy one.

As I love my 905 so much, I'll suggest the 901 as it's just the spec that's different.

Yup love my 905RS Too. The 2017 model has addressed all the minor upgrades I would choose for mine.

That pinnacle above is dead cheap and a great bike.

I have had a 45650b and own an Iroko. 45650b is fine but prefer the Iroko - lighter, longer and more compliant.

The 901 is also great, have ridden one and loved it. Bird Zero is similar and great value builds by some decent chaps.

Bird, Iroko or Whyte. Don't think you'll go wrong with any. Whyte may be the only one local to you if you have an LBS that stock them given Bird and Pinnacle are online (unless you're near an Evans store). May not make a difference to you depending how confident you are buying that way.

I've had a 901 and have a 905, brilliant bikes, I would recommend for the type of riding you want to do. Might be also worth looking at the new Orange Crush, 150mm of front travel and very slack.

It would be the 901 for me, especially as the 2017 one looks spot on to me except the lack of dropper (which the 905 address for more money obviously).

Colour scheme for the 901 looks ace, neon green and black forms, looks more than it costs in the pictures I've seen.

Love my 456. Got some older 140mm u-turn pikes on it and it's great.

I'm having a similar dilemma but between the 901, Orange Crush or Bird. The 901 is the best value especially at the moment but still am drawn to the Orange and Bird as you see less of them on the trails. Both the orange and 901 get raving reviews, I've not seen much on the Bird. Decisions, decisions...

Chiefgrooveguru you've gone and done it now, reckon it's between the Orange and Bird.

I too looking at the 901 & 905, but also came across the Scott scale plus. 120mm forks and 66.5 degree head angle ...

I've got a Orange crush and think its the best hardtail I've owned including a 456 and a Prince Albert. That said If I had the cash I'd have a whyte 905.
